The Dos and Don'ts of the Paris Catacombs

1,292 Reviews
Human remains of millions of Parisians lie 135 feet underground at the Paris Catacombs (Les Catacombes). This fascinating attraction in the 14th arrondissement doesn't appeal to all, but for those who are interested, here are some dos and don'ts.

DO book a skip-the-line ticket.
Visitors to this popular attraction are limited to 200 at any time, and the line can get long. A skip-the-line ticket will allow you to bypass the queue so you can maximize your time in Paris.

DO go in the morning.
The experience at the Catacombs is the same no matter what time of day you visit, but going in the morning means less chance of delayed admission due to crowds.

DO bring a layer.
The temperature underground in the Catacombs is about 57° F (14° C), much cooler than Paris in summer, so you might want a sweater, jacket, or scarf to help with the chill.

DON'T wear heels or other uncomfortable shoes.
Exploring the Catacombs requires going down 130 steps and back up 83 steps, so make sure you've got comfortable footwear.

DON'T visit the catacombs if you have certain conditions.
You'll be underground in the presence of human bones—visiting the Catacombs is not recommended for those with heart or respiratory problems, those with nervous conditions, or young children who may be afraid.

DON'T bring much.
There is no cloakroom or baggage check, so don't bring anything you don't want to carry with you through the tunnels.
