Located at the southern tip of the Chilean Lake District, Puerto Montt is an industrial city with strong German influence that’s also close to Bariloche and Argentine Patagonia. Given that there’s little to do in the city itself, the Puerto Montt Cruise Port serves primarily as a jumping-off point for trips to the nearby lakes and mountains.
After docking just 20-minutes away from the city center, most passengers take some time to peruse the craft markets before heading off on independent adventures to the surrounding mountains, rivers, and villages. Shore excursions are generally more convenient ways to get to know more of the region though—from Lake Llanquihue, Frutillar, and Puerto Varas to nearby Pelluco Beach or the Petrohué Falls—and typically include round-trip transportation. Kayaking, biking, ziplining, and canoeing are also popular activities.
Puerto Montt is a tender port, meaning that passengers are taken to shore in smaller boats that typically dock at the Tenglo pier. From there, the city center is a 20-minute walk and taxis are also plentiful. Shore excursions typically include round-trip transportation for greater convenience.
The official language in Puerto Montt is Spanish, but limited English may be spoken by those working in the tourism industry. The local currency is the Chilean peso and you can look for a “casa de cambio” to change US dollars to pesos, or cash traveler’s checks. Credit cards are generally accepted and ATMs are available throughout the city.
