Meet your guide and small group of no more than 12 people at New Wave Guest House in central Bagan in time for an 8am departure.

Soak up the scenery as you leave the town and travel out into the countryside. After an around 45-minute drive, stop in the village of Pakkoku, home to one of Myanmar’s largest Thanakha markets. Listen as your guide explains the importance of Thanakha, an ancient beauty treatment renowned throughout Myanmar, and perhaps purchase some of the unique cosmetic paste, which is made from ground bark and is said to treat everything from wrinkles, sun damage, and acne, to headaches and fevers.

Enjoy some traditional tea at a local teahouse and snack on some tasty street foods, before continuing to Kyunkalay village, around a 45-minute drive away.

On arrival in Kyunkalay, get a glimpse of local life as you explore the traditional village, an off-the-grid community, where locals get around by bicycle or ox-driven cart. Learn more about everyday life as you watch locals going about their daily tasks and hear about the work of ActionAid Myanmar, a non-profit organization that helps communities such as Kyunkalay with sustainable development projects. Finish your experience by enjoying a typical Burmese lunch with a local family in their home.

After lunch, hop aboard an ox-driven cart for a fun ride to the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. Then, cruise across the river to Nyaung U Jetty on the other side, where your tour ends.

This tour runs in partnership with ActionAid Myanmar, which is committed to responsible and sustainable tourism, taking care not to negatively impact the village’s culture and heritage.
