This Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek 4WD tour from Broome explores two of the Kimberley region’s most popular attractions. After morning tea at a roadhouse along the Fitzroy River, see the historical Boab Prison Tree in Derby, then traverse the 4x4 Gibb River Road to Windjana Gorge National Park. Search for freshwater crocodiles and look for fossils in the ancient reef, part of the Napier Range. After a picnic lunch, follow your guide on foot through an underground labyrinth at Tunnel Creek, with the option to swim in a refreshing watering hole.
  • See the historic Boab Prison Tree
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch at Windjana Gorge
  • Take a guided walking tour of Tunnel Creek
  • Morning and afternoon tea included plus hotel pickup and drop-off
Start your Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek 4WD tour with early morning pickup from your hotel. Departing Broome for the Kimberley, hear informative commentary from your guide on the geography of the region.

You'll stop at the Willare Roadhouse for morning tea beside the Fitzroy River, then continue on to the Boab Prison Tree, rumored to have been used in the 1890s to imprison indigenous Australians en route to nearby Derby for sentencing.

After a look, continue along the Gibb River Road, a former cattle route accessible by 4WD vehicles. You'll arrive at Windjana Gorge, an ancient reef oasis of the Napier Range, made of soaring limestone walls rising more than 300 feet (90 meters). Search for fossils of shells and tiny marine creatures as your guide points out any wildlife, including birds and freshwater crocodiles that stealthily inhabit the Lennard River.

After a picnic lunch, depart Windjana Gorge for Tunnel Creek in the afternoon. Disembark your vehicle for a guided walking tour of subterranean tunnels that form an underground labyrinth beneath the Napier Range. Your guide reveals the history of white settlement in the Kimberley region and shares the legendary tale of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal tracker who led an insurrection against colonizing pastoralists and hid out in the gorge in the late 19th century.

Reward your walk with a refreshing dip in a swimming hole before a last stop at the ruins of Lillimooloora Station to view the sunset. Your 15-hour day trip includes afternoon tea and an optional dinner (own expense), before arriving back in Broome at night.

Big day but so worth it.

The day was long, but was so worth going. Our guide Ollie was fantastic. You need to be a relatively active person to keep up. However we were not rushed on any of our stops. The commentary from Ollie was awesome. Ollie was very informative, he certainly new his stuff and was very interesting. The day was full of adventure and we had plenty to see. To finish our days ride home viewed an amazing sunset. Thanks Ollie for a great day :)

Our driver, Sean, was quite amazing. He was our driver, tour guide and food organizer. I was especially impressed with the way he unfolded the history of the Bunaba people and delivered it in an honest and refreshing way. The entire experience made a deep impression on me. Thank you Sean, I hope you get paid well!

Want a great value Kimberley experience. This is the way to do it. Well organised. Our driver/guide Shawn was fantastic in his knowledge of the area and his friendly attitude. This 12 hour trip is hard work but it gives you a great feel of the area. The Gorge is spectacular and the Tunnel creek is a fascinating natural formation. All the catering was very well done and the final dinner was good value. Shawn was also very skilled in dodging the cattle

A long day but we saw everything advertised. Even came carefully close to crocodiles. Great guide who was knowledgeable and informative. Food was good for an outback experience. Worth the trip.

The tour was a long day and much to see most of the time. Our driver, Ross, kept the commentary flowing when it needed to be and gave us some breaks to concentrate on the scenery and wildlife. The knowledge displayed by Ross of the country, its stories, the indigenous people of the area kept us all entertained and informed. We would recommend that, for the tunnel walk, specialist boating shoes would make it easier. I know that the instruction given was for shoes that could get wet, but more than that is needed. The food was tasty and adequate well served and kept cold. Drinks were plentiful and again cold. Thanks Ross for being a great host and great company.

Realise that the Kimberley is a huge place, but found this tour extremely long for just seeing two sights for a short time at each site. Almost 12 hours in travel time to see places for 2 - 3 hours

This is a good tour to see to beautiful places, we had a knowable guide and the provided food was good. This is a long day so be prepared, we departed our resort at 8.00 am and didn't return until 9.15 pm. The first stop for morning tea is a 2 hour drive, followed by a four hour drive to tunnel Creek were we had lunch before exploring Tunnel Creek. You will need to bring walking shoes and ones to get wet, as you wade through some water about 30 cm in September. A 30 to 40 minute drive to Windjana Gorge, were we saw Fresh water Crocodiles, Bats and other animals. You then drive back to the morning tea stop for dinner at your own cost ordered at morning tea.
