What To Expect

Indulge in a half day of wine tasting along the Waipara wine trail, renowned for its warm, dry climate and limestone-rich soils — ideal for growing the premium quality grapes that produce some of New Zealand’s most distinctive wine.

Following pickup by coach from your centrally located hotel in Christchurch, your guide takes you on a 40-minute drive to Waipara, one of the South Island’s burgeoning wine regions. Visit cellars and tasting rooms during guided tours of four boutique vineyards in North Canterbury, and sample a distinctive selection of both red and white wines (see below).

Enjoy a lunch of fresh, seasonal dishes that pair well with your wine (if option selected) before hotel drop-off in Christchurch.

Sample wineries:
• Waipara Hills (formerly Mud House): sample award-winning pinot gris and riesling along with other varietals at the Cellar Door
• Pegasus Bay Winery: discover sustainable viticulture used to bring out the complex flavors and fruit character of the wines
• Torlesse Wines: based in Waipara Village, it prides itself on hand-crafted wines, including gold-medal Torlesse Gewürztraminer and Waipara sauvignon blanc
• Waipara Springs Winery: the 64-acre (26-hectare) vineyard grows a range of varietals for their Waipara Springs and Premo labels; visit the Southern Boundary Wines Cellar Door to sample older vintages

Waipara Springs Winery

Travelling north from your pick up location from Christchurch, arrive at your first stop at the beautiful Waipara Springs: one of the oldest and most popular wineries of the region. Enjoy wine tastings and a delicious pattered lunch (if option is selected - you will be here longer).

Traveler Tips

Pegasus Bay is worth the trip alone, great wine and awesome atmosphere.
Slight problem with pickup from ship but no big deal.
Only one thing I would recommend - an option for a lighter lunch or none at all if so desired.

The wineries were amazing and the staff were so informative about everything and the history of the wineries was so interesting all in all a 10/10 experience
Response from Host, May 2022

Half good half bad
Jonathan_E, Mar 2022
The first and last stops were by far the best, really nice and the hosts were so nice. Our second stop was not nice at all, couldn’t understand the host, we’re seated inside a room with no windows, the flys were unreal, told to speed it up when we’re not taking long at all. The van driver was nice.
Response from Host, Mar 2022
Thank you for taking the time to submit your review. The second winery was Torlesse a winery we have used on all of our wine tours for the past 30 years and have never has a poor review regarding their wines, facliities or staff until now. However, in these difficuilt times with staffing becoming an issue due to Omicron operations are far from normal for everyone. The room with no windows you refer to was actually a marque extension, again being used due to social distancing and attempting to keep everyone safe, There are window flaps which can be opened.

This tour was such a fun experience. We chose it as it was a rainy day but you barely notice little things like weather when drinking delicious wines.

Nice but rushed
Lisa_G, Jul 2021
I felt that this wine tour was very rushed and we would have enjoyed it more if there was some more time including some time for a nice cheese platter.
Response from Host, Aug 2021
Thank you for your review and I am sorry to learn that you thought the wine tour was rushed. We conduct this tour daily and over the years have refined this tour to ensure it meets everyone's expectations and from the reviews you can see that it normally always does. We allow 45 minutes at each winery for the tastings which is normally more than enough time even for the larger groups to enjoy the experience. I do hope you have the opportunity to travel with us again and would recommend our wine tour with the platter lunch option which is a longer tour and includes some fine cheeses.
Awesome experience
Harley_F, May 2021
Amazing wine tour. Great tour of the 3 vineyards. We had the lunch included in the waipara winery and that was very nice. Learnt quite a bit about wines! Tour guide Scott was awesome. Highly recommended.
Response from Host, May 2021

Enjoyable afternoon out for stressed work mate's.
Myra_K, Mar 2021
We had a great day. Driver was great. Staff at the wineries were all friendly. Lunch was ok. Looked impressive, but lacked spread for the rolls. A light afternoon tea at the 3rd winery would be a good inclusion. Esp when trying a lot of wines. Breads and dips/ oils would be the go to. Esp to compliment the various wines.
Response from Host, Mar 2021
Thank you for your feedback which is important to us. Great to hear that you had an enjoyable day. It would be nice to be able to include an afternoon tea into the tour itinerary, however, as I am sure you can appreciate time is a factor and to do so it would mean that we would only have time to visit three wineries and not four.
