Get picked up from your Arequipa hotel in the morning by an air-conditioned coach bus, and transfer to the traditional district of Cayma via the new Chilina Bridge.
While in Cayma you’ll have time to visit the main church, home of the Virgin of Candelaria built by Dominican monks in 1544, and explore the main plaza. Proceed next to the Añashuayco district, where you’ll learn about how the area’s famous white volcanic stone (called “Sillar”) is mined and extracted for use in Arequipa’s buildings. You’ll also get an introduction to local geology and the daily operations of the area quarries.
Continue your trip in Yanahuara, stopping to shop for bargains in the market of Antiquilla. You’ll also visit Yanahuara’s main plaza, offering wonderful views of the region’s nearby volcanoes and the area’s traditional streets. Leave Yanahuara and continue to Arequipa’s main square, where you’ll learn about the city’s famous cathedral from your guide.
Finish the excursion at the entrance to the Santa Catalina Monastery, where you guide can provide details about visiting this historic monument. Your trip ends here.
