Not worth the money. The car was clean...
Bryan K
, Feb 2017
Not worth the money. The car was clean, the driver was polite, sweet and helpful, and thankfully not overbearing or too talkative. When we arrived to the fort, I asked about lunch, we had been in the car for 5 hours since 7 AM. There was no lunch readily available at the fort and it would have added another hour onto our already long journey to drive back to the city we just passed to find a place. The fort was very beautiful, but for some reason we drove past half of it with the guide. The guide seemed rushed or something, he was very dry and was uninteresting. He unknowingly focused solely on the oppression of women, the beauty of women and the queen, etc. and repeated the same stories over and over at every site about the Jauher suicides that occurred there. I tried to ask him in depth questions, but his response always circled back to cliche trivial stories of beautiful queens and such. Several other tour groups were entering into the shade of some of the ancient temples and for whatever reason, we were not. I asked if we could also go in, but he said that we were already inside the building. I found the fort to be visually fascinating and was interested to know more, but we did not cover much ground. We were disappointed to say the least. Leaving at 7am and arriving in Udaipur at 4 PM, we still had not eaten a proper lunch, only buttered toast and a piece of fruit at a stand in the fort. Once we reached Udaipur, our driver was unable to locate our hotel he did not have GPS. We stopped several times to ask for directions, but drove around within the city for another 30 minutes until we had to get out and take a taxi. A nod to the kind driver for kindly escorting us with the tak tak to ensure we made it to the hotel. For the cost, we could have hired a driver to take us straight to Udaipur for a mere 60 USD, but instead we were ripped off in yet another Indian tourist trap at the hefty price of 239. Such a shame, it could have been a far more magical adventure.
