Meet a driver at your hotel in downtown La Fortuna for a 7:30am departure, then travel to the western edge of Cerro Chato to begin your hike. Watch for wildlife as you climb into the rainforest, following a steep ridge up the west side of Cerro Chato—it’s a good idea to bring sturdy shoes, as the trail to the crater can be muddy.
When you reach the edge of the Cerro Chato crater, descend to an emerald-green lake that’s fringed with tropical trees, then hike back up the eastern side of the crater. Once you’ve climbed over the edge, you’ll head straight for La Fortuna Waterfall, where the Arenal River drops 230 feet (70 meters) into a deep pool (it’s the perfect spot to cool off after the hike).
After roughly four hours of hiking, begin the return trip to your La Fortuna hotel, with drop-off at roughly 3pm.
