Put on warm winter layers, meet your guide at your central Saariselkä hotel, and travel into the snow-covered countryside by air-conditioned minibus.
Along the way, gaze out at the silhouetted fells and forests, and hear stories about the Northern Lights — otherwise called the Aurora Borealis — and the Lapland myths and folklore that have grown up around them.
Arrive at the Northern Light Resort, and hear from your guide how the remote setting, far from the electric glow of towns and cities, boosts the chances of spotting the lights.
Go inside an igloo-theater and watch a fascinating multimedia presentation on the lights. Learn how the colorful ribbons of light are triggered by electrically charged particles, and admire images of some of the beautiful recent displays that have graced in Lapland’s skies.
Next, head outside to stroll around the Northern Light Resort and watch for the lights. Get useful pointers from your guide on how to capture the best photos of the Northern Lights, and with luck, be treated to a display. While sightings can’t be guaranteed, the low light pollution will heighten the chances of catching a show.
Afterward, defrost with traditional reindeer burgers and hot berry juice at the Lappish hut.
Then, when the time comes, return to Saariselkä, where your trip finishes at your hotel.
