For seasoned veterans of the city, perhaps explore a new side of Lisbon. Check-out off the beaten path neighborhoods like Martim Moniz a lively area with a mix of immigrant communities, or indulge Lisbon cuisine in the trendy district of Alcântara.
Half-Day Tour Example Itinerary:9am: Meet your guide at a central Lisbon location and head for the vintage Lisbon tram 28 for a ride up the hill to historic Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest districts. From here, enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city.
10.30am: From your elevated position near the mighty St George’s Castle (São Jorge Castle), gaze down at Lisbon below. Listen as your guide share details about the various neighborhoods and explains the history of the city. Wind down towards the Moorish Alfama district, a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets. This lively area is full of popular restaurants and bars and the sounds of traditional Portuguese Fado music spills out onto the streets.
Take in Alfama’s top attractions, including the 12th-century Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), The Doll Hospital (Hospital de Bonecas) and the Jesuit church of São Roque, which hides an ornate and expensively decorated interior behind its deceptively simple façade. Sample ginjinha (a sweet cherry liqueur), take photos of the colorful street art and stop into craft stores to see fine Portuguese tiles.
