Get an up-close encounter with the amazing animals of Australia on this small-group wildlife tour! Traveling with an expert naturalist guide, you’ll explore the bush and grasslands of Melbourne’s western plains to spot roaming residents including wild kangaroos, koalas, emus, cockatoos and more. Learn about the natural habitats and behavior of these wonderful creatures, and enjoy a gourmet lunch on this full day tour. Numbers are limited to ten people to ensure a personalized experience.
  • Enjoy a full-day away from the hustle and bustle of the city and get up close to wild kangaroos and koalas in the wild
  • Small group naturalist guided tour, maximum of 10 people, ensures a personal and intimate experience
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch or dinner of gourmet sandwiches, fruit and cake
  • Learn about the research project and the history of the You Yangs Park
  • Plenty of photo opportunities
  • Hotel pickup and drop off
After morning pickup from select Melbourne hotels, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle to a national park in the western plains (see Hotel Pickup tab for details). Follow your guide on a relatively flat and easy bushwalk through a wildlife sanctuary, where you’re likely to spot wild koalas in their natural habitat. Learn about the park’s ongoing koala research project and conservation efforts to protect the furry critters. Feel free to ask any questions of your knowledgeable guide, who is actively involved in wildlife preservation efforts.

Travel to various locations throughout the park and get out of the vehicle for up to five different walks through grasslands, bush, and watery billabongs. Observe ‘mobs’ of wild kangaroos, free-roaming emus, and flocks of noisy cockatoos in their natural surroundings. Your guide will share background information on the area, which holds great significance for the local aboriginal people of the Wathaurong tribe.

Midway through your tour, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch surrounded by the rustic beauty of the park. Top off your meal with cakes, coffee and traditional Australian billy tea — a popular way of refreshing while in the bush.

At the end of your 7.5-hour wildlife excursion, you’ll be dropped off back at the original departure point in the early evening.

We could not schedule through Viking so we went out on our own and are thankful that we did. There were 8 of us in a van with our personal guide Martin. He made every effort to make sure that we saw everything there was to see. If we had gone with Viking it would have been 1/40 people and cost quite a bit more.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about Australian wildlife. He made sure we saw kangaroos and koalas up close. This tour was so educational and fun!

It was a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience. Great staff - knowledgeable and friendly. Amazing to see these animals out in the wild and not in a zoo.

Great experience as we were able to walk-a-bout to locate koalas and kangaroos in the wild. Learned how to make outback tea this group hosts additional tours which if I ever have a chance to visit again, I would book additional tours with this group.

Fantastic visit to the bush to see Koalas and kangaroos - saw both in their natural environments - a skilled and knowledgeable guide who made it a memorable experience even down to showing how to make traditional billy tea.

We were lucky and we were alone on the trip so it was really individual safari. The guide was great - scope of information we've received was full.
We've seen koalas, kangaroos and emus plenty of bird species.

This was an excellent tour with a very knowledgeable, experienced and personable tour guide Mike. We were taken into the You Yangs and spotted lots of kangaroo's and wallabies. We also were able to observe a stumped tail lizard, an echidna, a brushy-tailed possum and even a large 2 metre brown snake of which we gave a wide berth. And we finally found the elusive kola. We then travelled to the nearby Serendip Sanctuary where we were provided a fabulous lunch topped off by a wonderful desert of Anzac cookies and Lamington cake and a billy of tea made from eucalyptus leaves that we had picked. In the afternoon we observed numerous emus including a mother with 8 young playing in the water. We also saw a blue tongue lizard, kangaroos, wallabies and a nest of a a restless fly catcher.

All in all an excellent tour. I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to experience a taste of life in the wilds of Australia.
