Learn about Fiji's rich history and culture on an action-packed shore excursion to the Navua River from Suva. Your itinerary features four activities including a ride upriver in a longboat canoe, a local village tour with lunch, swimming at a stunning waterfall, and bamboo rafting on the river. Includes guide, transportation, activities, lunch, and port pickup and drop-off.
  • Witness a kava ceremony, watch traditional dancing, and try Fijian cuisine while visiting a village on the Navua River
  • Swim in a series of natural pools created by waterfalls
  • Soak in the lush scenery along the river while floating on a bamboo raft
  • Includes lunch, all activities, and port pickup and drop-off
After morning pickup from the cruise ship port in Suva, travel by air-conditioned coach for one about an hour to reach Pacific Harbour - Navua.

Cruise up the Navua River by canoe, taking in the scenic landscape of villages, tropical rainforest, and waterfalls. Stop at a small village where a local warrior escorts you to the village meeting house (bure) and introduces you to village traditions including the sacred yaqona (kava) ceremony.

Your guide shares the history of the village and shows you gardens with native crops, medicinal herbs, and kava plants. Watch young men perform war dances and women perform folk dances (except Sundays), and have the option to join in. You also visit a village pre-school and learn about handicraft souvenirs made by the villagers.

Have a typical lunch of Fijian fare and watch as the main dishes are uncovered after cooking in an underground oven.

Next up, head to the biggest waterfall in the area, which is situated about one hour up the river. A short walk takes you to the first pool, and your guide can lead you to bigger waterfalls if you're feeling adventurous.

Your final activity is a leisurely float downriver on sturdy bamboo rafts, which was the main mode of travel before roads and motor vehicles were introduced.

At the end of your tour, your guide returns you to the Suva cruise ship port.

Great Day in Suva
Billy B
, Dec 2019
The day was a little longer than expected but well worth it. The drive back and forth was not too bad and the driver pointed out plenty of sights along the way. The people working the tour made us feel very welcome and kept the day very interesting. The river part of the tour was great and the waterfall was absolutely beautiful. The bamboo raft part of the trip was a little forced since you only travel across the river but we made the best of it. The lunch and welcome by the village was great. I would recommend this tour.

Great Day

The day was just great. From the bus driver to our guide at the village, and the guys who drove the boats, it was excellent from start to finish. Highly recommend it

This tour was so wonderful, we highly recommend. From our bus driver to the lead in the village, Nem, we had a blast even though it was pouring rain. The village ceremony was great, the kava presentations was interesting. They gave us rain coats and down the river we went over rapids to the waterfall. The waterfall was scary to climb but we were well taken care of on that front. Our boat driver made sure we experienced the full effect. We didn't do the bamboo raft, but wished we did, those that did seemed to love it. The wild ride back down the river was just as much fun as the one up. I highly recommend this trip and the operators. They are AWESOME!!
Wonderful feast

We enjoyed the kava ceremony and other native cultural demonstrations. The feast of local foods was terrific! From the village, we took a longboat trip up the river to a waterfall where a few people swam, although in September the water was very cold. We returned to the village - part of the trip on a bamboo raft, but no "shooting the rapids" by raft. Be sure to take some money with you to buy some of the native crafts made in the village.
Fabulous Day

What an amazing day spent with these wonderful people. They brought us to their village where we participated in a kava ceremony. They then shared with us their skill in weaving a basket from a palm frond. They demonstrated how they make the beautiful tapas. They cooked an amazing lunch for us. Sang songs. Really allowed us a peak into their culture. They then took us on a boat ride up river past several waterfalls. We stopped at on beautiful waterfall where you could get in the pool and swim. We finally ended up floating part way back to the village on a traditional bamboo raft. It was simply an amazing day. We were in Suva on a Paul Gauguin cruise. This was such a day well spent. Bring some money for purchases as the people of the village have some of their crafts on sale after lunch for good prices. We were a group of 6 from ages 48-72. Everyone loved the adventure. I would highly recommend!!

Fantastic tour. The village experience was educational and fun. Good local food. You have to try the Kava. The river boat ride was wild and exciting. Totally unexpected. The water fall swim was cold but worth it. A must do adventure.
Gorgeous adventure in the rainforest, a little dangerous for small children
, Nov 2018
So we loved this day. However, parts of it were treacherous and we had three small children with us. I'd caution that if you are thinking about doing it, make sure your kids are at least 10. The motorboat isn't really a motorboat, but a canoe with a motor attached. The river ride was stunning, but there were whitecaps, rocks, swells, and swirls to navigate. It was super bumpy, fast, and more of a thrill ride than a leisure ride. And the path up to the waterfall was treacherous, especially for little legs - a small narrow slippery stone path with one rope handrail. Often our feet were submerged in the water and the water was blasting past with ferocity. Not for the faint of heart, not for children under 10, not for anyone with back or balance issues. Spectacular scenery though, a lovely village, the cultural elements were great, and we enjoyed it.
