What To Expect

Your 9-hour trip begins with mid-morning pickup from your downtown Portland hotel. Awe at the beauty of the Cascade Mountains as your luxury van courses along the Columbia River to your first destination – waterfall spotting!

The Gorge is home to more than 90 stunning waterfalls. Follow your naturalist guide on a series of short walks through the mossy wilderness to view some of the most beloved among them, concluding with a stop at the magnificent Multnomah Falls. This awe-inspiring cascade plummets 611-feet, making it the second-highest waterfall in the US. Take a souvenir picture on the Benson Bridge, then grab a warm cup of tea and snack before heading to Hood River.

As you continue east, you may catch sight of windsurfers and kiteboarders zipping along the water. The high winds in this region make Hood River a global destination for windsurfing and a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Stop in this charming town for lunch (see below for a sample menu) and then cross the Cascade Divide, where the terrain shifts dramatically to high desert. Catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or osprey diving from basalt cliffs or soaring through towering pines.

Your final stop is The Dalles, home of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. Learn the harrowing story of early pioneers on the Oregon Trail, local American Indian tribes, and the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition.

If possible, a visit to Maryhill Museum of Art (open March 15 through November 15) is a must. See an impressive collection of world art, including a massive Auguste Rodin exhibit and artifacts from the Pacific Northwest’s indigenous groups. You'll return to your Portland hotel by early evening.

My day-long trip was wonderful! My guide/driver was very knowledgeable about the history of the Columbia River, and the plants, trees and birds we saw along the way. He brought along some excellent coffee and homemade coffee cake for a mid-morning snack, and took me to a really good casual restaurant for lunch. I felt relaxed at all times--even though I'm normally a nervous passenger. It was altogether a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend this tour. I just wish I had taken along a camera. Thank you!
