Overview

Discover the splendors of Kutná Hora, once nicknamed the ‘City of Silver’, on this day trip from Prague. With an expert guide, travel through the countryside by coach to the UNESCO-listed Czech town that built its wealth on silver mining and once rivaled Prague. Ogle the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel decorated with human bones; and then devote your attention to the medieval Old Town. Enjoy free time for lunch and see the Church of St Barbara, the former Royal Mint and other landmarks as your guide recounts Kutna’s history.
  • Kutná Hora day trip from Prague by private bus, led by an expert guide
  • Discover the ‘City of Silver,’ a medieval silver mining town that once rivaled Prague
  • Visit the macabre Sedlec Ossuary, created from human skulls and bones
  • See the bone chandelier and decorations, made from around 40,000 human skeletons
  • Explore UNESCO-listed Kutná Old Town, including magnificent St Barbara Church
  • Stop for lunch (own expense) in Kutná and see its Plague Column, Italian Court and more
  • Enjoy the scenery on a return bus ride through central Bohemia
Make your own way to central Prague and meet your guide. Then, take the bus to the historical Czech town of Kutná Hora, once one of Bohemia’s most important towns.
As you travel, hear about Kutná’s history and how, having grown up around a 12th-century Cistercian monastery, it rose to prominence after the discovery of silver ore in the 13th century, coming to rival Prague in wealth and power during the late Middle Ages.
Once at Kutná, travel to the Sedlec Ossuary on the town’s outskirts. Enter the chapel and be awestruck by the haunting walls, ceilings and furnishings — all made from or covered in real, medieval human bones. As you inspect the morbid contents, discover why the chapel exists and how the bones are believed to come from around 40,000 people.
Continue into Kutná’s Old Town, an open-air museum awarded UNESCO World Heritage status for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Visit the Gothic Church of St Barbara to admire its opulent interior and wall frescoes of medieval miners, and learn how the church was dedicated to St Barbara, the miners’ patron saint.
Delve into the quaint squares and alleyways, and see other landmarks such as the impressive Italian Court — a fortified building that served as Kutna’s Royal Mint — and the Gothic Hrádek (Little Castle) palace.
Break for lunch (own expense), and in the afternoon, witness more Kutná highlights, including the Knight’s Hall and intricately carved Plague Column.
When the time comes, catch the return bus to Prague, where your tour finishes at the station.

We were apprehensive about booking a large group tour as have not enjoyed them in the past. This tour is large but absolutely does not feel rushed at all! it’s actually the best personal value tour I’ve booked in Europe (over 5 years) and Andy is hands down the best tour guide I’ve come across. He is witty, entertaining and has all the history and arts knowledge you could wish for in a guide without becoming boring or feeling like a school teacher. If you don’t know which Kutna Hora tour to book, book this one for sure🌟

Overall a very good tour. Knowledgeable (Canadian) guide although a little over the top at times! Bone chapel a little creepy but worth the visit as so unusual. Recommended.
A very enjoyable day

The Sedlec Ossuary is amazing, testament to human artistry even though some might find it macabre. Loved our time there. The town of Kutna Hora is lovely, especially St Barbara's Cathedral which is beautiful. Lunch at Dačický was really nice, the beer and food were good, especially the wild boar goulash which I had. Portions were generous and the quality was good. The tour guide Andy was great - very knowledgable and a fun guy to listen to, like his particular take on history and his style of telling stories.

The bus was very crowded with a group of Italian speaking clients. The English speaking were put at the back of the bus but unfortunately we wouldn't all fit so some were at the front so we could not hear our English speaking guide and could not undertstand the Italian. We were all rather forced into having lunch at a particular restaurant whether we wanted it or not which many of the clients found rather distastful. It was a long day as we went to a winery and two clients were lost so I guess we were late leaving. If I was to return I would find our own way to Kutna Hora. It was my second time there, only because I had a young adult grandson with me.
Surprising such a small town has so many monuments to see

The bone chapel has a lot of history behind it. I did not feel uncomfortable or spooked when inside. Respect was shown for the dead which was good. I don’t think you will see anything like this anywhere else. Worth a visit. Dave our guide was excellent and had a good knowledge of the history of Prague and the surrounding areas. He could do any tour. He integrated well with all the guests and invited us to ask any questions at any given time. The restaurant was good authentic Czech food. I can personally recommend the wild boar goulash with gingerbread dumplings and the homemade lemonade. The Barbara Cathedral has a nice architectural mix, as was the interior. I really liked the French style used in the balustrades. Worth a visit.

Great day trip! We had a wonderful guide, Ian, who was very knowledgeable and personable. The Sedlec Ossuary is amazing to see in person, you can read about it and see pictures but it something different in person... it inspired a proposal from a couple in our tour group! The St. Barbara's was absolutely stunning, great photo opportunities. Definitely recommend this trip!
