Overview

Relive your favorite scenes with the Von Trapp family on this private 'Sound of Music' tour from Salzburg. Led by a private guide, pass iconic film locations aboard your coach, including Nonnberg Abbey, Schloss Hellbrunn, and the Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children famously sang 'Do-Re-Mi.' Then, visit the wedding church at Mondsee and soak up the incredible landscape of the Salzkammergut region. To keep the fun going, upgrade your ticket to include an apple strudel cooking class.
  • Private 4-hour tour of 'Sound of Music' filming locations from Salzburg
  • See filming locations of the iconic musical, including the Mirabell Gardens and the Schloss Hellbrunn
  • Admire Maria’s wedding church in Mondsee and visit Liesl's and Rolf’s reconstructed glass gazebo
  • Head into the idyllic Salzkammergut region whose lakes and mountains formed the opening titles
  • Hear inside gossip and tales about the film’s making in 1965
  • Upgrade to include a 1-hour apple strudel cooking class in a pretty Alpine hut
  • Receive the full attention of an expert driver-guide on this private tour for up to eight people
Begin your 4-hour tour with pickup from your hotel in Salzburg or meet at a central pickup point. Hop aboard your minivan with your local driver and guide and take off on your original 'Sound of Music' experience. While you travel, learn fun facts and behind-the-scenes stories about the classic musical and sing along with some of the beloved songs playing in the background.
Travel toward the 17th-century Schloss Hellbrunn (Hellbrunn Castle) to visit the reconstructed garden gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen.'
Afterward, drive to the stunning region of Salzkammergut and marvel at the Alpine mountains and glassy lakes featured in the opening scenes. Pass the charming village of St. Gilgen, home to the movie’s mountain railway.
Next, spot the yellow church in Mondsee where Maria’s wedding famously took place. Then, return to Salzburg to discover two more iconic locations: the Mirabell Palace and Nonnberg Abbey, where the convent scenes were filmed.
Your tour ends at the original starting point. Since this is a private tour, be sure to list any special interests you have at the time of booking so that your guide will know them in advance, and then, on the day, talk to your guide about any sights you want to see more or less of, so they can tailor your itinerary around your wishes.
See the Itinerary section below for details about the cooking school upgrade.

Helvinka was spectacular!!!!

Our tour was great! Helvinka the guide really made the difference. She shared both the history of Salzburg, the real history of Sound of Music, and the fun stuff in Sound of Music. She had the actual music and played it on route to the locations where the music was sung. Her attitude, courtesy, and enthusiasm made the trip a 10 out of 10!!!! If there is a way to request her, I would do it. The trip was my wife, daughter and me. We all love the movie and Helvinka made us love it even more. Thank you Helvinka!

I really wanted to love this tour as our family has seen Sound of Music multiple times. I gave it a rating of 4-5. My hubby gave it 2-3, so we settled on 3. If we were to do it again, it would be for the sake of convenience, and I would not pay 150 Euro extra for a private tour. There is nothing seen different from the public tour, and in fact, the atmosphere might be more enjoyable with a group of like-minded fans. There is nothing on this tour which could not be seen if you have your own transportation. Hard-core fans will likely already know most of the anecdotes. Even with public transport, the only spot difficult to access would be Mondsee, which is the location of the church where the wedding scene was shot. Even that could be done by bus if you had an hour each way to spare. As it is, it's about 40 minutes from Salzburg by car or bus, and that is a LOT of time to fill. If you're chatting with a travel companion or belting out the movie score with a bus full of others, it could be fun. For us it was just awkward. First, the guide forgot the CD and spent what seemed like an awfully long time pulled off on the side of the road trying to download it. We really were fine without it, but after she went to the trouble of borrowing it from a colleague we literally followed the group tour from stop to stop, I felt obliged to hum along and try unsuccessfully to get my family to do likewise. While our guide was very sweet and willing to chat, she was also new to the job only 3 months. We've taken many tours, and the guide always sets the tone. Some are dynamic and engaging while others have a script at each stop and leave it to you to drive any additional conversation. This was definitely the latter. If I'm paying for a private tour, I don't want to feel like the pressure is on me to make sure everyone else, including the guide, is having a good time. If felt like an awkward first date. I was somewhat relieved and think the guide was too when she dropped us at Mirabell Palace and we could just wander and recreate silly photo ops from the movie. In summary--a worthwhile tour if you don't have the means to travel on your own, but consider the group version to save your money to go see other sites like the trick fountains at Schloss Hellbrunn or the salt mines.

We took a 4 hr private tour. Saw the filming sites. But - on the way back from the lake area our driver fell asleep at the wheel. Had it not been for my husband holding the steering wheel and shouting at the driver, I would not be here to write this review.

I was extremely excited about this tour but the actual experience was less than I had hoped. I was eager to walk through Mirabella Gardens, learn about the filming of the movie, hear about back stories, etc. Some of the most iconic scenes from the movie all occur within the city. Instead, we spent less than 10 minutes in the downtown area of Salzburg. The majority of time was spent driving to film sites outside of the city. Although some of those sites were just a few minutes away the Von Trapp family home, or the Gazebo at Hellbrun Palace, others took as much as 40 minutes to drive to - such as the lake district or the wedding chapel. Don't get me wrong, the scenery was magnificent. The countryside surrounding Salzburg is wonderful, but the time spent traveling to/from those surrounding areas occupied a significant portion of our private 4-hour tour. I would simply caution people interested in this tour to consider where you want to spend your time...perhaps develop a plan in advance with your tour guide.

This was a fabulous tour, and Wolfgang made it so personable and special for us. There were 5 of us who were all enthralled by the places we saw. Wolfgang gave us an insight into the history of the making of the film and why the places were chosen. He shared some history of Salzburg and Austria which delighted us. He took pictures of our group at various places which were all wonderful. He was a most gracious host. It was a highlight of our trip!

Well worth the time. Our tour guide was Wolfgang and he was fantastic, giving us an insight that was well beyond the sites. Ask for Wolfgang and you won't be disappointed. We recommended him to our friends who also visited Salzburg and they were just as happy as we were.

This private tour was worth every penny! Anthony, our guide was awesome! Taking this tour was the whole reason we went to Germany and Austria. If you love Sound of Music, please take this tour. Highlight was walking down the aisle of the same church the Captain and Maria got married in. Will always remember this tour.
