First Time Sailing, Snorkeling? This trip is for you!
, Sep 2019
I had a great time with the Castillo Tours team snorkeling and sailing on their catamaran. I had my reservations about the tour, because I'm no party animal and generally don't enjoy high-energy activities. This tour however, was incredibly chill, you're at once made to feel welcome and never pressured to do anything you aren't comfortable with.
Swimmers and non-swimmers alike can enjoy this tour because the Castillo Tours team does well to ensure that people with little swimming experience can enjoy the beautiful beach at Icacos while learning to snorkel at an easy pace. As an experienced swimmer myself but a first-time snorkeler, I enjoyed myself immensely! Granted we also had fantastic sailing weather that day which contributed much to my enjoyment; all praise is due to God for that! 😉
As the description states, you're given a deliciously fresh lunch (kudos to Jelixa and her amazing ninja fruit cutting skills!) and yes--there's even bottomless rum drinks to enjoy. Because I don't drink myself, I was concerned with the prospect of being around so many others who would, but don't let that discourage you! Everyone present got along really well and were responsible in their consumption. Then again, my friend and I booked this tour during Puerto Rico's off-season, which may have been the reason why our group was mainly made up of people age 30+. I wonder what it's like during Spring Break....
I would only like to make a suggestion to the tour team to advise their participants to have something to eat beforehand, or at least, try not to over do it when swimming. I was easily tired out, not having eaten beforehand, which made me feel a little queasy.
If you're traveling to Puerto Rico and you'd like for one day to have some fun without getting too crazy, this is definitely the tour to book! Even if you're staying in San Juan, Carlos, the tour group's charismatic driver, will pick you up in designated areas around the city and transport you to and from Fajardo. Do it! This trip could easily cost more for the experience you'll have! I'm so glad I participated!
Was it a party? Heck yes!
Does it leave WAY too early if you were at the casino till 3 am? Undoubtedly.
Was it just the right length of time
In all? Also yes.
Was the snorkeling amazing? Not really... if you’ve ever been before it was pretty much the same, we did see some jellyfish at the second stop, which was both terrifying and beautiful 😂 There were only one or two other boats anchored at the reef, so it wasn’t terribly crowded.
Getting off the boat there are stairs, (or you can jump at the second stop) and then a drop into 4 ft deep water. To get back on board you have to be able
To pull yourself onto the stairs, but if you have someone to give your butt a push if you’re not very mobile it’s not too bad.
They do have a head (bathroom) on board, the boat was much larger than I expected. There were probably 40 people
on board. When the description said it doesn’t sail with less than 12 I was expecting a more personal experience.
The drinks are free flowing, they have clear rum, pina coladas, rum punch, coke, sprite, tea and water. They had good music, the crew was very friendly, knew what they were doing, served everyone and kept it all cleaned up nicely. Lunch was assembled while everyone played in the water at the first stop (you could touch the bottom and stand around and drink if you didn’t want to learn to snorkel). They had chicken salad, tuna salad, lunch meats, sliced cheeses, tomatoes, a green salad, carrots, sweet peppers, and soft rolls for making sandwiches, and some bean thing too.
Then it was off to the deep spot for snorkeling (take a sandwich roll into the water with you! All the fish mob you :))
a little bit of lazing about on the boat, and they served some fresh fruit (looked fabulous but was sadly not very ripe) and then we headed back to the dock. They had all the birthday people do a shot and everyone sang.
You should know that this cruise leaves at 8:30 am, so if you’re in San Juan that’s an HOUR car ride to the dock (we arranged our own sprinter van bc we had 9people) and that is very early if you’re a vacation partier. The boat felt a little overcrowded, everyone was squished together while we sailed, but we had quite a few large people on our cruise too so that could have been part of it.
Also, there is a 3$/person cash fee due at check in at the dock for nature preservation or something.
Overall it was a great day and everyone had a good time :) and great naps were had by all afterward :)
The entire excursion was extremely amazing. It exceeded my expectations. The crew was very helpful, attentive and funny. I don’t really know how to swim so I was a bit scared at first but the captain helped me every step along the way and made me very comfortable. It was worth every single penny. I highly recommend it
WOW! This was an AMAZING day! catamaran ride, private island, DELICIOUS lunch, pina coladas, rum punch ... everything so well done, so professional, so fun! The entire crew was extremely hospitable, asking us constantly if we wanted water, drinks, etc. GREAT music! They made a beautiful fruit salad for an afternoon snack. I had a migraine and the girl got a bucket and lined it with a plastic bag in case I vomited, gave me an ice pack. Someone got a cut and the Captain cleaned it, put bandage, etc. Beautiful, friendly, patient, helped people with their masks. DO THIS, Y'ALL!!! It is phenomenal!
I went with a group of 12 and we all agree... everything about this cruise was great: the drinks, the food, the music, and of course the staff! I personally did not snorkel but I saw others who did and they seemed to enjoy themselves. There was plenty of time to snorkel, hangout on the beach, and/or stay on the boat and drink and hangout with friends. Beforehand I was a little nervous about what the vibe would be on this cruise, but it was exactly what I was looking for to jump start my 30th birthday trip. I'd definitely do this again if given the chance.
