What To Expect
Your day starts with morning pickup from your Sydney hotel and a 70-minute scenic drive to Tobruk Sheep Station. Relax in a climate-controlled bus and take in views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Great Northern Road as you travel.
Australian stockmen on horseback welcome you to the ranch when you arrive. Your first stop is Drover’s Camp, where you learn to prepare traditional stockman’s tucker (food): damper and billy tea, both prepared directly on the campfire. Hear about the history of Tobruk and the life of a stockman as you sip your morning tea and snack on damper served with butter and syrup. Watch how billy tea is made, which includes swinging the pot at arm’s length to make the tea leaves settle prior to drinking. Damper is bread cooked over the heat of the flames.
Upon finishing your morning tea, observe the Stockman’s Roundup, a show of skill that highlights the horse riding skills of the stockman along with the coordination between sheepdog and stockman when rounding up sheep. Keep your camera handy for photo ops!
Next up, witness sheep-shearing, a job that requires great skill and agility. You might even attempt to shear a sheep yourself, under the guidance of a veteran. Take a break from the sheep to enjoy a lunch feast that features a classic Aussie barbecue. Sample from a variety of dishes such as fresh steak, green salad, damper rolls, topped off with a traditional Lamington cake for a sweet dessert treat.
Afterward, your ranch guide shows you techniques for throwing boomerangs accurately and cracking a whip. In the early afternoon, return to Sydney via a road with views of the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury River Valley. Your tour ends with hotel drop-off.
