Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Dennis was excellent!
Dennis our tour guide was excellent! He was very personable, had a great attitude and was very informative. He was also very considerate, especially on a hot June afternoon… overall I had an excellent experience, a lot because of Dennis (he should get a bonus!)

Colosseum Underground Night Tour
Touring the Colosseum at night is a must on your visit to Rome. The underground was especially interesting and you don’t have the crowd that you have when touring during the daytime. Guide was very knowledgeable as well. Definitely recommend.

Colosseum Night Tour
This was a great tour. Doing it in the evening was a way to avoid the heat and the crowds of June in the city. The tour also gave us an opportunity to see the underground part and learn the history of the workings of the Colosseum. It was very interesting. Finishing the tour after the sun set made for beautiful pictures. I highly recommend the tour.

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
Danielle V was an excellent guide offering insights on history, culture, and the many layers of structure in the area of the Colosseum. We had special access to newly opened areas and he took care of all arrangements while walking us from shaded area to the next bit of shade. It was a hot day, but he kept us in as much shade as possible and pointed out the fountains where we could refill our water bottles. So much history in one small area is overwhelming, but also awe inspiring.

Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
Colosseum Tour Guide - Elida The tour exceeded my expectations because of our tour guide. She enjoyed relaying information, she enjoys the subject, and was even on point with humor. She was kind, knowledgeable, and even routed me to my favorite pasta place that made you want to lick the plate! We came back for seconds of Bruschetta later that night! Elida was wonderful, looked out for all of us, never rushed us, looked for shady spots whenever possible and made history intriguing.

Colosseum Underground Tour With Arena Floor: Vip Experience
GIovanna was very informative. She showed us photos to illustrate her stories of the colosseum’s rich history. We walked through the underground level which was recently opened. Quite interesting. It was crowded so it was helpful to have used earphones. Giovanna also walked us to the Forum entrance and told us where to go from there. Very helpful.

We took the for kids Colosseum tour with a 7 and 4 year old. The group was perfectly paced and curated by a knowledgeable and patient young archaeologist. We learned, and our kids learned while being engage and entertained. Bring lots of water! Long lines at fountains and stands.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
