To witness the Scarlet Ibis come home to roost is the only one of its kind in the Region. They are the rare "beautiful birds" whose loss are mourned by many because they bring a refreshing uniqueness to the world. They are the creatures who feed the souls of others. The brother realizes his loss as Doodle dies. He cries, holding him and "sheltering [his] fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain." The Scarlet Ibis - Wikipedia "The Scarlet Ibis" is a short story written by novelist James Hurst. It was first published in The Atlantic Monthly in July 1960 and won the "Atlantic First" award. The story has become a classic of American literature, and has been frequently republished in high school anthologies and other collections. * A traveler said: "The swamp is just amazing. Read up on the scarlet ibis to appreciate this even more. Mitch dropped us onto the boats from our hotel. The tour itself was great fun. This being November, scarlet ibises come to roost here and we saw around 2000 of them perched on an island full of trees. I'd recommend taking a long lens camera for this. After the tour Mitch was on hand to take us back to hotel, not before taking us to eat some local doubles in town. They were magnificent. This was an exceptional experience and many thanks to Mitch for that."
