Ganab is the name of this private tour, and this is one of the places we visit, but there are a lot of other places we explore on this adventure!
The theme of this trip is the desolate desert between the Swakop River and the dreaded C14 national road. Very arid and isolated, it is quite rare and well worth seeing. From the dune belt at the coast the landscape changes rapidly to wide open spaces and gravel plains. On these gravel plains the plantlife has adapted quite uniquely to the desolate surroundings.
We visit the scenic Moon Landscape and Goanikones oasis on the way to Blutkoppen. The oasis has a nice restaurant and very good toilet facilities, which are needed on long trips like this. This is usually followed by an hour's drive up the Swakop river bed to see some wildlife that inhabit the river.
Blutkoppe is well worth visiting for it's wind carved caves and sensual shapes. Getting to the caves requires a bit of walking, and elevation, so it is not suitable for the mobility impaired. This part can be skipped, of course, and substituted with a drive to the Tinkas Dam.
From the Tinkas area we drive along the escarpment to the Ganab area. While we prepare for lunch here, there is usually wildlife to watch, ranging from Giraffe, Ostrich, Jackal, Oryx and wild boar.
For lunch we find some shade and usually prepare a Barbecue in nature! However, if this is not to your liking, we can do pick nick or lunch boxes or whatever fits into our fridges. The surroundings are beautiful, and well worth exploring while we wait for the fire to be ready.
The desert changes quite a lot with rainfall and the wildlife moves around, so no two tours are the same, some may be bone dry, and others have lush greenery and wildlife everywhere.
It is worth mentioning that some of the roads that we will be traveling are quite corrugated, and traveling over them can be quite noisy. Your vehicle for this adventure is a trustworthy Toyota FJ80, with air conditioning, and can handle the rough road.
Vogelvederberg boasts some impressive wind carved rock formations, and is a good lookout over the desert, and makes a welcome break to stretch our legs on the return journey to Walvis Bay.
We offer free pickup in Walvis Bay & Swakopmund, including the harbor of Walvis Bay, for this tour. As we are still solving the issues with the booking systems, please provide us with an email address on your booking so that we can give you with the best experience possible.
