Meet your driver at your central Beijing hotel, and make the roughly 1.5-hour journey to the Mutianyu Great Wall by private, air-conditioned vehicle. On route, tell your driver if there’s something you want to see more of. Your tour is private, so the itinerary is flexible.
Renowned for its gorgeous scenery, Mutianyu was built in the 6th century before reconstruction during the Ming dynasty (1368 -1644). It was restored in the 1980s, with handrails added to some steep sections.
On arrival, let your driver advise on purchasing tickets (own expense): choosing a round-trip cable car ride to the wall, or to take the chairlift and return via the downhill toboggan run.
Then, enjoy two to three hours on the wall independently. Admire the battlements set against the magnificent backdrop of the wall weaving into the distance.
Afterward, refuel with a dumpling lunch (own expense) at a local restaurant before visiting Beijing’s Summer Palace — the summertime retreat of China’s later emperors.
Enjoy ample time to stroll independently around the gardens, pavilions, bridges, and temples, all framing Kunming Lake. Visit the teahouses and shops, and see highlights like the Marble Boat and Long Corridor.
Your day trip finishes with a hotel drop-off.
