Overview

Experience the beauty and traditions of Romanian country life on a private, full-day tour from Iasi. Visit charming villages nestled in the shadow of the Carpathians where time seems to stand still, and explore Moldavia’s rural culture through historic monasteries, fortresses, and a folk museum.
  • Private, full-day tour of the northeast Romanian countryside from Iasi
  • Learn about Moldavian history at the Neamţ Monastery and Citadel
  • Visit traditional villages where locals still use horse-drawn carts
  • Come face-to-face with native wildlife at a bison reservation
  • Try on Romanian folk costumes at the Nicolae Popa Museum
Your full day in the country begins with pickup at your hotel in a private vehicle and a drive outside the urban boundaries to reach the unspoiled countryside of northeast Romania. Begin with an exploration of the region’s spiritual heritage at the 15th-century Neamţ Monastery, one of the oldest in the country and a fine example of traditional Moldavian architecture. Pay a visit to the nearby Neamţ Citadel, an important military stronghold that once survived a siege by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and offers fantastic panoramic views from its strategic hilltop setting.

Next, appreciate the region’s natural bounty with a visit to a bison reservation before continuing onto the commune of Agapia, where traditional rural ways of life are still practiced by locals. See the Agapia Orthodox Monastery and several charming villages where residents still travel by horse-drawn cart and cook over an open fire using homegrown produce.

Further delve into country customs at the Nicolae Popa Museum, showcasing regional folklore, handicrafts, and attire. Here, you'll have a chance to try on traditional folk costumes and pose for pictures to create a unique memento of your rural experience. At the end of the day, relax on the return journey to Iasi, where the full-day tour concludes with hotel drop-off.

This rural experience was a very enjoyable day. I have been to Romania four times now and with each visit I get to see and experience so much more of this beautiful country. The landscape, citadel, monastery, and Nicolae Popa museum was a great insight into the rich history and culture within Romania. My guide Lucian was fantastic even organising an impromptu visit to a family which was the highlight of the day. They welcomed you traditionally, quenched your thirst and appetite with home made food and beverages and then put me to work husking some corn. Absolutely an awesome experience that will stay with me forever.

A family trip to Bucovina Painted Monasteries

Private three days tour of Iasi and UNESCO Painted Monasteries in Bucovina | Sep 2019
We were thrilled with our tour of the beautiful region of Bucovina and surrounding Moldavia. We could not have had a better experience than with the Rolandia guides, Madalina in Iasi and Iulian in Bucovina. They both created an atmosphere of cheerful welcome and a spirit of discovery, as well as being extremely knowledgeable and interested in engaging with us. With only two days to visit four monasteries, one fortress, a castle and two museums, our tour of Bucovina was quite packed, but Iulian organized our time very professionally without making us feel rushed. Iulian was also a great driver and used the time in the car as an opportunity to educate us about a variety of local customs and other facts about the region. The painted monasteries well deserve their UNESCO recognition--they are incredible pieces of art and architecture, totally unique to their place and time. Iulian's explanations of the historical and religious contexts in which the churches were decorated were more than invaluable and went far beyond anything we had in our guidebooks. We also greatly enjoyed the Popa museum with its collection of folk art and artifacts. The included hotel stays consisted of two nights in Iasi and one night in Gura Humorului--in Iasi the 4-star hotel accommodation was comfortable and we appreciated the ample breakfast. In Gura Humorului, accommodation was of a completely different style, in rustic cottage rooms well off the beaten track. Here we really felt like we saw a true slice of Romanian country life. We were served fresh milk from the cow and "placinta" cake made by the hotel owner. The contrast between the urban stay in Iasi and the experience of the more rural areas was an interesting aspect of the tour. The included dinner in Bucovina was an incredible experience--all the food was sourced from a local farm and delicious, if heavy on meat. In all, we had a terrific and fun experience and would highly recommend this tour. It was perfect for an American couple and their adult daughter living in Romania to spend family time together.

Private day trip from Iasi to the UNESCO Painted Monasteries in Bucovina | Sep 2019
I am amazed that tourists do not swarm these magnificent testaments to human achievement. The interiors are breathtaking, and the backdrop of small towns with their horses and carts was irresistible. I would place this as the number one attraction in Romania.

Private day trip from Iasi to the UNESCO Painted Monasteries in Bucovina | Nov 2016

I would like to take the time and recommend this tour for anyone that wants to discover the beautiful Romania. This tour was very pleasant was very informative, and very well organized so I would like to recommend it to everyone. Also I would like take the time to tell you about our guide Mr. Niku .
Never before I met such a guide. This guide working for Rolandia tours is the most informative the most humble guide I have ever met. He took us to the Bucovina area he was our driver and our guide. This is one of the most recommended guide that you must take when you arrive to the Iasi area . When you do and take Rolandia tours as your agency ,please ask for Mr. Niku to be your guide. You will never be sorry taking this guide, I fully recommend this tour for anyone and I fully advice everyone who takes this tour to ask for Mr.Niku to be your guide.

Private Iasi City Tour | Jan 2016

A great tour of Iasi for my first time in Romania. My guide, Mihai, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The schedule was flexible and we ended up not going to the Botanical Gardens no flowers really in bloom so we stayed longer at the other sites. Overall wonderful experience!
