Pleasant round-trip!

9/16/19 We found the the Shuttle Service personnel holding a Glacier Shuttle Service sign exactly as described. We waited approximately 15 mins. for the white bus to arrive. Our driver, Dave, was full of fun facts, stories and information about Juneau and Mendenhall Glacier which made our ride both fascinating and enjoyable. We were fortunate to have had Dave on our return trip. He gave us tips on where to shop "local" and wonderful places to eat and drink. Thanks to him, we enjoyed a dinner of the best fish and chips we ever tasted!

Pleasant and efficient way to get to Mendenhall Visitor Center and area hiking trails

I booked the Mendenhall Glacier shuttle service for our family of four so that we could easily access the Mendenhall Visitor Center and hiking trails during our recent visit to Juneau while on an Alaskan cruise. I'm not a fan of cruise-organized excursions and prefer to avoid the masses, (too)-slow execution, tedium, and higher prices of going through the cruise. This was easy to book via Viator and offered the benefit of cancellation (up to a day before I believe), should our plans have changed. The shuttle starts at 8 a.m. and runs throughout the day. Our two bus drivers were informative and enjoyable, and the short trip (20 mins?) went quickly. The shuttle let us off a short distance from the visitor center, which had a number of interesting displays, an informative movie, and live talks about the glacier from an on-site ranger. After viewing the visitor center (we probably spent the better part of an hour, but could have easily spent longer), we took advantage of some of the nearby trails and enjoyed some hiking. The shuttle met at an easy-to-find location under the Roberts' Tram. Depending upon where your ship docks, you may be very close (as was the mammoth RC Ovation of the Seas ship), or if like us on the RC Radiance of the Seas, it will be about a mile/mile and a half walk (or ship shuttle) to the tram meeting place. The walk was easy and pleasant so we opted for that rather than having to wait around for the ship shuttle (I think the ship shuttle was $5).

Don't bother

This had to be there most disorganized bus trip I've ever seen. It's just a bus ride to the glacier! But was late both times and the number of people crammed into the bus was unsafe and a bit unfair for those who paid full price. Just use one of the many your companies on the dock. Not Juneau Tours.

Bad day in Alaska!!!

It is a long walk from the pier (especially for a disabled person using a walker with wheels!)…….but we finally made it (with help from a young lady on a bike/transport (for $5)……..then we couldn't find the reps (we were at the correct place!)…..asked every bus and rep we saw there!...….then our daughter saw this young lady with a "computer tablet" walking around and she asked her and it was our "rep"......she had no sign......the bus had no sign!!!.....she said to hurry because the last bus was leaving (we hadn't gotten around to asking about it because it was so "run-down" looking!)…...Anyway, I ran over to the bus and asked if they had room for 4 senior citizens and a walker with wheels...….and Archie told me it was the "wrong bus" (he thought he was being "funny"......and I told him that the young girl said that it was.....and he said he "Might" could find room for us!!!!…...I told Archie that I am too tired for his attitude and he said he was tired, took.....and things did not get better!!!!!.....Archie had the whole bus "laughing" [at me!!!]…...I was exhausted from running around looking for the rep and bus and I told him to stop.....he just got worse......Anyway, my husband and the other couple finally got over to the bus....and he found room for all of us.....but he was still "cracking jokes"......Then, when we got to the Mendenhall Glacier......Archie said we had to climb this steep hill to the visitor's center......but he did have "pity" on my husband and took him as close as he could…….We enjoyed seeing the Glacier......but it is too expensive (you can see prettier glaciers from the ship)…...Rye drove the tour bus back to town....and I give him a 10.....he drove the bus to the visitor center and picked up my husband.....A very unenjoyable day in Alaska!

Drivers were great. Archie's maybe? Grayish black hair guy late 50's maybe. Hilarious. Site is awesome. Take the time to walk to falls. Bring water or your own container with you. They have a bottle filler and dont sell bottle water only containers.

Our day in Juneau happened to be the...

Our day in Juneau happened to be the 4th of July and the streets shut down from 11:00am-1:30pm for the 4th of July parade. This meant that no tour buses, or any other vehicles, could arrive or depart during that time period. If the tour company had warned us about this, we would have planned an earlier departure and would have had more time to explore the glacier.

My husband and I took a cruise to Alaska and we decided to go to Mendenhall Glacier. Instead of booking the excursion through the cruise line the cruise excursions didn't spend much time there, we booked the shuttle service and set off on our own. I'm glad we did. Not only was the cost extremely reasonable, but it felt more like a tour then just a bus ride. Our driver a teacher from, I believe TX, told us stories of the history of Juneau during the 20-30 minute drive. When we were ready to leave the park and head back to town, the bus stop was jam packed. We figured, since the shuttle runs every 30 minutes, we would be waiting for the next. Nope. There happened to be 2 shuttles in the park. The 2nd shuttle wasn't scheduled to stop, but since he saw that there were so many people waiting, he would take a busload back to town. I would definitely recommend using the service if you want to visit Mendenhall.

Visiting Mendenhall Glacier on our own...

Visiting Mendenhall Glacier on our own was definitely the right choice and Viator made it easy with this voucher. I do not like to haggle with kiosks at cruise ports, its stressful to me. We walked off the ship to under the tram and there was the shuttle, showed our printed out voucher and boarded the shuttle. The driver was pleasant and provided fun information on the way to Mendenhall as well as pointing out eagles. Hiked to falls and other trails, had a lovely day. Shuttle back to town was effortless as well. Highly recommend!

Round trip Mendenhall Glacier Shuttle...
Manjula P
, Jun 2017
Round trip Mendenhall Glacier Shuttle Service was very good. Waiting time for shuttles in both directions was minimal. The driver nicely informs about the place and its history enroute. However buying the tickets directly from Juneau tours either up on arrival at Juneau or over phone before commencement of the cruise could have saved a few bucks. But no regrets.
