Awful is an understatement!

We arrived at 9:10 for our 9:15 tour. Our tour guide arrived late and was clearly flustered, not to mention hot given the temperature in Lyon. She did not ask our names at the beginning of the tour. Simply said she would be showing us some of the sights of Lyon and to "stay close". She then walked ahead and expected us to follow her. Throughout the tour she would then walk ahead and wait for the group to catch up, not engaging or explaining during the course of the tour. During the tour, her knowledge of the sights was basic at best. There was no depth to the explanations or discussion. We were shown a chapel with no explanation of the history or context. During our visit to the silk shop, she allowed another tour guide to provide the explanation and actually taped the presentation. It was extremely awkward for all on our tour and we eventually walked out of the room. The other tour guide was clearly upset. No explanation or apology was given. At one point, she was stopped by a television crew to give an interview and she proceeded to speak to them on camera while our tour watched. During one portion of the tour, Carol walked so far ahead that the entire group we were caught at a light. She did not even notice and was across the bridge before she finally stopped and waited for the tour to catch up. She proceeded to offer us the "tastings" that were outlined in the itinerary. The tastings included bread, one type of cheese and one type of meat. She noted that the previous group did not eat the cheese so she only purchased a small amount. Her explanation for both was that they were local to Lyon. While we were eating, she had a coughing attack and went to get a drink. She came back with a beer. My children asked why the tour guide was drinking during the tour. She then proceeded to ask us if we wanted to visit the market which was included in the price of the tour. She asked us if we had bus tickets or if she needed to purchase them for us. It was apparent she had the tickets but wanted to keep them for future use. She noted that the market would not be very interesting as most shops would be closed. She was encouraging us not to go which at this point we all agreed was best. When we told her we were not going to the market, she wished us well. A 3 1/2 hour tour was completed in a little over 2 hours. Everyone on the tour agreed it was an awful experience. Would not recommend the guide or operator.

Please kindly note you are visitors in this country and as such should behave as so. The Tour Guide was shocked that amongst 3 men plus younger men or even the female participants did not make any space for the Tour Guide to sit down so the Tour Guide nearly choked while eating standing up.The food tasting is offered by the Guide and is just that a taste of Lyonnais gastronomy culture before taking you to the bigger Paul Bocuse markets. Please note some groups choose a wine or beer which is not included in the Tour. Also for a group to sit at a delicatessen when the Guide is leaving is bad manners and often we meet at the Silkshop and whoever is there can tell you about the Silk Trade.

With all good conscience, after speaking with a Viator customer service rep, I cannot recommend this tour, Paul Bocuse market is closed on Monday's... Our tour was rushed, our guide had limited knowledge of major landmarks, i.e - in some cases didn't even know what they were. Tasting among 5 people, was one baguette, 1.5L of water, a dozen slices of Rosette de Lyon and a 100 grams of soft cheese ... and to top it all off after that, the Paul Bocuse market was closed that day, Monday's. This is France, that market is closed on Mondays, Google it. The guide didn't know this? They shouldn't be giving this particular tour on that day... and as for relaying your true feelings about the tour, good manners dictate that you don't confront the guide in front of the other guests.

Tour in French by an English Guide who has lived 25 years in France. Please dress comfortably especially shoes. There is a little walking on flat cobblestones. We take a train up the big hill.
