Overview

Purchase piglets and chicks to help local villages on a 4-hour community experience in Nairobi that explores food, farming, and poverty. Get beyond the tourist sites as you visit a Nairobi street market and meet locals in a pair of struggling villages on the outskirts of the Kenyan capital.
  • 4-hour community aid tour in Nairobi
  • Visit a local market
  • Deliver pigs and chickens to a village
  • Meet Kenyans in a pair of poor communities
  • Free hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Led by a local guide
Begin with pickup at your hotel in Nairobi, then travel to a local street market with a guide and small group—for a more personalized experience, participants in this community tour are limited to 12. Pick up the piglets and chicks that local communities will raise as a source of food and income, then travel to Kikuyu and Kayole, two villages on the outskirts of Nairobi.

Learn about the work of a partner organization, One Horizon Africa, and how they’re working to ensure that poor communities have sustainable food sources. Pigs and chickens breed quickly, and can provide cash income along with eggs, chicken meat, and pork, and the United Nations and the World Health Organization consider pig and chicken farming as excellent tools for overcoming malnutrition. Deliver the piglets and chicks from the Nairobi market, then visit a private home to hear local stories about life in the community over cups of tea and coffee.

This tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel in Nairobi.

This is an amazing cultural experience. The organization has a very worth while effort to give these grandma's a chance to learn a skill that should allow them the opportunity at supporting, feeding and educating their grandchildren. They are happy learning business skills and proud to share their life stories.

Amazing tour. It was a great experience meeting the women who are part of the Grandmothers Project. They were welcoming and willing to share their life stories. Being recipients of 5 pigs through One Horizon has changed their lives.

I cannot recommend this trip enough! A truly inspiring and humbling day spent with non-profit organisation One Horizon who help Grandmothers who are suffering from illness and crippling poverty whilst looking after their grandchildren. Rather than just giving money, the aim of the scheme is to donate chickens or piglets, together with feed, so that the grandmas can create their own small livelihood. Chickens and pigs are animals which grow quickly, therefore providing eggs and piglets within a few months which can be sold. By empowering the grandmas to create their own small income, One Horizon is also helping their grandchildren and the wider community.
I was picked up by Caroline and Solomon from One Horizon and we drove to Kikuyu where we bought 50 chickens and a large sack of chicken feed. The money I paid for this trip is used to buy these products and I then went to visit two of the grandmas to hear their stories and hand over the chicks. One of the grandmas is head of the local school and I was welcomed by all the children who sang and danced to celebrate my arrival. Together with four of the grandmas we then went to one of their homes and cooked a traditional lunch which we shared together. After lunch the grandmas then told their stories - I was moved to tears by the inner strength of these amazing women and their resilience to cope with hardships which no-one should have to suffer. They are so grateful for the help which they have been given and the fact that there is now light at the end of the tunnel. As I left I felt humbled and grateful to have been given the chance to spend a day with these inspiring people and to have been able to play a small part in this amazing project!
