Make your own way to the starting point in central Prague and set off with your guide on your walking tour.

Stroll across the beautiful Vltava River and admire the panoramic views of the UNESCO-listed Prague Castle complex from the riverside. Learn how this architectural tour-de-force is the world’s largest self-contained castle complex, and was once the power base of Bohemia’s kings, Holy Roman Emperors and Czechoslovakia’s presidents.

Climb the hillside as your guide describes the events and people that shaped Prague’s fortunes through the ages, and how the castle dates back to the 9th century.

Delve into Malá Strana, the Baroque district spread beneath the walls. Pose for photos outside the 18th-century St Nicholas Church and World War II memorial, and then catch a tram (own cost) to the castle.

Enter the complex through the North Gate and admire the Royal Gardens and Powder Bridge on route to Hradčany Square. Here, take in the handsome Schwarzenberg Palace and statue of Czechoslovakia’s first president, Tomas Masaryks.

Continue through the Neo-Classical Second Courtyard into the Third Courtyard, the latter dominated by St Vitus Cathedral, one of Europe’s largest churches.

Follow your guide inside to gaze at the magnificent interior, and then pass the Golden Gate, Vladislav Hall and St George’s Basilica on your way to Golden Lane. This picturebook cobblestoned alley is lined with colorful cottages that once housed servants, fusiliers and goldsmiths, and was also home to the great Czech-Jewish writer Franz Kafka between 1916 and 1917.

Delve into the dwellings, some converted into fascinating museums and others into arty souvenir and craft shops.

Finally, leave the castle and stop on the hillside to snap photos of Prague spread below. Your tour then finishes here or at the Charles Bridge.

This tour is a waste of time

It is far better to go up to the castle yourself. You will see much more and in your own time, so save your money for going into the castle. The tour is too much chat and not enough viewing. Didn’t like the way the tour leader bad-mouthed the President.

We had a great tour with Andrea. We had taken several tours in Croatia and Prague and we thought Andrea was the best tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and easy to hear amongst the crowds.

We learned so much and it gave so much more meaning to everything we saw. Pavel was an excellent guide and made the tour informative and fun from someone who clearly loves his country and knows its history so well. Totally recommend this tour.

Not a full castle tour

Let me start by saying the guide, Pavel, was awesome. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and I learned a lot of things I wouldn’t have if I had not gone on the tour. HOWEVER, this is not a full tour in the sense that you got to go to the pay to access areas and skip the line, etc. Rather, Pavel told us which tickets to buy and which to skip. This was an enormous disappointment to me because I wanted to see everything and I didn’t get to do that on this tour. Therefore, I had to go back the next morning to see the the whole cathedral and the rest of the sights on my own using my guidebook. I would recommend this tour to you if you don’t care much about getting into the pay to access areas (which I found extremely worth paying for the next day) or if you want to hear things from a native’s perspective, which is what I enjoyed most about this tour.

Lyle (an American in Prague :-) ) gave us a lot of information during this tour. He perfectly scheduled his time so we were able to see the changing of the guards and could have a peep into the cathedral before closing time. Well done !

Brilliant guide - Jeremy Fane - extremely knowledgable. Good voice so we could all hear him. The tour took in the ‘lesser’ district. It poured with rain but we still enjoyed it and learnt a lot
