A bit of confusion during pickup (my wife and I were allowed onto a different van because ours was according to the tour operator "very late", then we had to turn around to pick up more passengers they forgot). Omar, the guide and driver, gave a lot of background on Iceland and the Northern Lights, and told many jokes that the fairly grumpy group of passengers mostly refused to acknowledge. When we arrived at our destination for aurora-hunting around 9:30, we were told that the best chance to see the lights was between 10:30 and 12:15, so we settled in to wait. It was, of course, cold, so we could go back in to the van to get out of the wind and wait for lights, which more and more people did as time passed with no activity. By 11:30, three rude Americans had had enough and were complaining about the tour continuing, even though it was supposed to last til midnight. They had some generally awful things to say about a young woman who had brought a fancy camera to capture the lights, and who had not yet given up by the time the Americans had. In general, they were obnoxious and embarrassing, especially to other Americans who don't think the world revolves around them. Close to midnight, Omar also gave up, and we drove back to the city. We didn't see the lights, despite Omar's considerable efforts. I would recommend this tour, and specifically Omar, to others.
We got to check this one off the bucket list!!

So here's the thing about northern lights - you're never guaranteed that you'll see them. Because of that, we booked this tour for our first night. The weather was really bad - and the tour was cancelled - and rescheduled for the next night. That was also cancelled - same reason. The third day, it seemed to us that the weather was still bad - but the tour was a go. I wondered whether they just wanted our money - and called to ask. They assured me that they watched the weather closely - and thought there was a good chance we'd see something, despite my app saying there was 0% chance. They were right! Maria was our guide. She took us about 60 km away from Reykjavik - to be away from light pollution. We saw white lights - which is what is commonly seen by the naked eye. You can bring a good camera - or maybe download a night vision app onto your phone - so you can get good pictures. But there was a guide there from another Thule tour who took pictures and emailed them to us. They are spectacular! We are so happy we booked with this company - one that didn't just try to get our money, but waited until we'd have a good experience!
