What To Expect

Your snorkeling destination is Silfra, an underwater ravine near Lake Thingvallavtan, located inside UNESCO-listed Thingvellir.

This freshwater gorge is formed from a crack in the Earth’s crust where the world's continental Eurasian and North American tectonic plates lie a short distance apart. The ravine water is estimated to be 1,000-year-old glacial water from Iceland’s second-biggest glacier, Langjökull, and takes about 30 years to filter through the lava rock, making it incredibly clear.

On arrival at Silfra, change into the provided warm undergarment and drysuit. Next, don the supplied face mask, snorkel, and fins, and listen to a comprehensive safety briefing and instructions. Then, with a guide showing the way, descend into the crystal-clear waters for a 30- to 40-minute expedition.

Admire the electric blues of the water and multicolored rock formations, and follow your guide through the four main areas. Swim through the Silfra Big Crack where the continental plates almost touch each other, and soak in the majesty of Silfra Cathedral, Hall, and Lagoon. The water clarity is such that visibility can extend to 328 to 492 feet (100 to 150 meters). Your guide will take photos on route that will be available for downloading free of charge after your tour.

When it’s time, leave the water, change back into your everyday clothes, and savor hot chocolate and cookies. Your tour then concludes either when you leave Silfra independently, or enjoy a return transfer and drop-off at the original start point in Reykjavik.

Lovely experience, well worth doing if you're in Iceland, its such an experience, the experience takes about 30 minutes in the water, but there is a lot of time out of the water getting used to your equipment, which is important! I'd recommend bringing a change of clothes in case you get wet a towel, but no need for a bathing suit. Thanks again!
Great Experience

My husband and I were so happy we chose to do this tour. The water was not as cold as expected in September, but we are used to cold water being from Cape Cod/Boston. Great tour guides. Only issue was the line getting into the water because there were so many tours happening.

We enjoyed our snorkeling experience. The guides were thorough and fun, They explained the process well. The water was painfully cold but the view was cool. Just walking around the park there was wonderful too.
Amazing experience.

This was a fabulous experience. I had never snorkeled before and the guys were extremely helpful and patient. Don’t wear jeans as you will need to take them off, wear yoga pants or some other tight fitting pant.
Wonderful and unique adventure in Iceland!!

Snorkeling between the fissures was amazing. This was my second time to book this tour and I wasn't disappointed. All of the tour guides understand superior customer service and interacted well with all participants. They are cognizant of safety while providing a unique experience. Our guide Juan was excellent and quite the character!! Highly recommend this tour!!!

What an experience. The guides settled my nerves about being cold and were very professional in making sure our suits, goggles and equipment were on properly and would not leak water. One girl was nervous in the water and the guide was so patient with her. The visibility was amazing. This was one of the best experiences We have ever had. The hot chocolate at the end was awesome. We recommend this as it really is an amazing tour.

Awesome awesome awesome experience. The diver guides were so much fun and really helpful. It was honestly an indescribable sight snorkeling the fissure. The guides even had GoPros to take pictures of us in the water. I was a solo traveler but felt very comfortable and made friends in the small group. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Iceland.

This tour was the best experience I had in Iceland and is in my top life experiences. Water obviously is freezing, but the dry suit keeps your body warm. You forget about the cold once you get in! 100% recommend this tour! Tour guides Miguel and Ivan get A+! Had so much fun with them and the group!

Nice experience, but it was more work than it was worth. You have to get dressed into your suits outside in the parking lot and in the winter its cold outside. It takes a while to completely get dressed into the gear. The gear is tight around your neck, i found it a little hard to breathe. Once your in the water it is not cold and the view is pretty. 30 mins is plenty of time in the water. After you get out you need to walk back to the van. This a cold walk and your gear is heavy. Expect your hands to be frozen after you get out of the water. but after you get back into your clothes and get gloves on you will warm up.

This tour was incredible! Snorkelling was the most amazing experience of my life so far and you can’t miss it! The tour guide (Manuel I think) was great too, I had a bit of a panic in the middle of tour but he was great at calming me down and held my hand through some of the tour! Highly recommend!

Connie M, Nov 2017
I called the tour company three times because we were somehow transferred by Guide to Iceland from Saga to Serta. The office staff was quite rude when I attempted to verify the time of pick-up Didn't someone already call to ask about pick-up time? hotel concierge called earlier. The tour begins at 0900 and we were told to be there from 0800-0830. The van did not arrive until past 0900 - aside from being late, the van was dirty and did not have a name/logo of which tour company it was unlike all the buses that picked up other tourists from bus stop no. 1. The tour guide don't remember his name was alright in the beginning but then became quite evident later on that he was rude and full of himself. there were only 4 of us in the van - a 30 year old European and three of us two of my companions were in their mid 50's. He came around our side of the van during a stop and asked us if is anyone over 65? because if there is, they cannot go on the tour. That comment surprised me because there was no warning at all on the webpage - was he trying to be funny OR INSULTINGLY RUDE??? The actual tour lasted only 30-45 mins - what the 4 hours tour means is that it's about an hour to and from pick up travel time and about 30 mins. to gear up and remove the double layered wet suits. The wet suits were either dumped in the backl of their van or hung hapzardly in the wooden fences at the parking lot - we noticed that the bigger tour operators had their suits neatly hung inside their vans. All other materials were in plastic bins all mixed up. During the dive, i was told to flip on my back and keep my knees to my chest - little did I know that I was going to be flipped over 360! I was not mentally and psychologically prepared for that I am a below average swimmer Thgis move caught me by surprise and totally disoriented me to the point that I lost my breath and almost drowned I floated back on my back and pulled off my snorkel - luckily Carlos who flipped me was nearby. I just could not keep up after that and asked him to let me hold on as the tour moved back to the exit point. THAT WAS A DANGEROUS STUNT that SHOULD BE DISCLOSED IN THE BEGINNING. I am sure they were trying to make it fun...but that was reckless. Our ride back was bumpy and fast because Carlos they switched drivers was probably in a hurry to pick up the next round of people. Stay away from this tour company - make sure you ask for their name!

The Silfra tour was absolutely amazing! This was my first time snorkeling and the guides were very patient, caring and helpful. The views under the water are incredible. I highly recommend trying this - especially if you are a first time snorkeler - the dry suit maintains your buoyancy on the water and makes the 40 minute swim very manageable.

To be able to say that you have snorkeled between two continents is great and you should also claim bragging rights for snorkeling in ice cold waters! Nevertheless, out of all of our tours, this was the only one we would not have done again. Both my wife and I found the dry suits to be very uncomfortable. We have been snorkeling before, but this was the first time that we found ourselves unable to maneuver well or even breath. The suits are so buoyant that you cannot easily sit up in the water and, at least for us, they were too tight and no, we are not huge people!. As time goes on and the tour groups perfect their approaches and equipment, this is one to consider, but for now... not so much. The guides also need to pay attention to customers who are having difficulties.

This was an amazing experience and it was so great to have a smaller group with hilarious and interesting guides, Ivan and Carlos. They took great GoPro pics and provided hot chocolate and cookies afterwards to warm up. Dry suit experience was so amazing and the water temperature didn't bother me after 5 minutes. In fact, I still wanted to keep exploring after the 30 minutes. Great anecdote from the guides: There are two kinds of wetsuit swimmers - those that pee in their wetsuit and those who lie about peeing in their wetsuit. This is a dry suit so don't be disgusting, people. Carlos even chatted with us for another 30 minutes while he waited for the next group. Great stories and I really wish we had extra cash on us for a tip - they deserve great tips!

The guides were wonderful Markus and Carlos!!! When we booked through Viator, it made us put in the name of our Reykjavik based hotel, even though we wanted to meet onsite. It caused some confusion because they were looking for us at that hotel, and we were at the site, so be sure to confirm where they meet you. The guides were very concerned about safety and fun, and it is absolutely a must-do when you are there!

This was the best thing I have experienced as a traveler! The scenery was breathtaking but it was our guides who made the experience so much fun! They took excellent care of us and made sure we had a great time. Do not miss this opportunity to experience nature at its most primal. The water was so clear that the bottom of the rift looked to be about 10 feet deep, rather than the 200 it really was. We were totally safe, totally relaxed, and only our hands were cold!
