The Island of Sant'Antioco

The island of Sant'Antioco is home to the ruins of the oldest urban settlement in Sardinia, the Phoenician city of Sulky. We walk in the town of Sant'Antioco itself where the ancient settlement once stood; its colourful houses line along the small port where every day the fishermen sell their catch. The looks, the smiles and every little gesture of the local people could resemble those of the Phoenicians, of a place that still hides secrets. One of them is the tradition of the byssus, the renowned golden brown marine natural filaments that are still spun and woven today to get fine embroidery. We stroll along the coast on beautiful beaches interspersed with rocky natural barriers where the waves of the turquoise sea break. And we finally reach Calasetta, a small town of white houses nestled in juniper woods and vineyards that stretch all the way to the coast in front of the Faro di Mangiabarche, a working lighthouse that still guides sailors to safety.

Along the ancient roman streets of Nora

We discover an archaeological jewel surrounded by the sea, to contemplate the ancient ruins that tell the story of a past that has left deep traces. After crossing a beautiful beach, we walk along a small hill to the temple of an ancient female punic deity: Tanit, the goddess of love and fertility. We look out slowly and stand before the city of Nora with its baths, villas, small houses and the theatre, which today still hosts poets, actors and prominent musicians during the hot summer nights. Along the ancient Roman roads, nothing around us goes unnoticed: the beauty of the mosaics, the noise of the waves crushing on the ruins that emerge out of the water, the marble blocks scarred by the passing of time, the columns that remain standing despite plundering and storms. It is a journey to follow the traces of rich merchants, young sailors and holy soldiers revered by an entire population.

Cagliari, the city you did not expect

Let's enjoy together the atmosphere of this city in the middle of the Mediterranean and live an incessant flow of unforgettable experiences. It takes little time to feel at home in Cagliari. Those who have already been here always want to return, to take a stroll in the old neighbourhoods amidst flowered balconies and parks where strawberries, lavender and peaches grow. Throughout history, different peoples arrived by sea and conquered the city before defending it themselves afterwards, only to surrender once again to new arrivals. The narrow streets of the old city always open up onto wonderful terraces where we can admire views over beaches and long stretches of water where thousands of pink flamingos wait for the sun to set before gliding over rooftops to astonish those who turn their heads up. The restaurants overlook small squares and keep intact the traditions of Sardinian cuisine. Cagliari is this and more, an ideal place where culture, sounds, flavours and aromas blend together.

The Black sheep of Arbus and the sand dunes of Piscinas

The Arbus countryside is home to the only black sheep farm in Sardinia, and a visit here is a unique experience. The cheese made on site is delicious because the black sheep, besides being raised free range, graze on fragrant wild herbs that give their milk an exceptional flavour. As we taste the local cheese, we can also smell the sea in the air of the Costa Verde. It is here where a small desert of extraordinary beauty stretches over many kilometres of some of the highest sand dunes in Europe. The beach of Piscinas is also a magical place: the turquoise of the sea merges with the bright colours of the yellow sand. Going up an old road immersed in Mediterranean scrub, we arrive in the Montevecchio mining area. In the nineteenth century, the mining activity here reached very important levels, and the structures and houses that are preserved, after the mines closed in 1991, feature architectural elements of considerable value. This is why Montevecchio is a UNESCO monument.

Sardinian's most unique winery experience

The vineyards, the scent of the Sardinian land, the sun, and men and women who live for wine-making – some of the hidden ingredients we discover in a glass of wine which we can now sip with a new awareness. Sardinian winemakers have always worked with hardship and passion, aware of being part of a history of wine-making, which started on the island some 3500 years ago. A few kilometres from Cagliari, we take part in a journey that starts among the rows of vineyards, to learn about the different types of grapes, and ends in the cellars, the places that preserve the memory of the wine culture. Wine tasting, always accompanied by simple delicacies of the culinary tradition of Sardinia, becomes a moment to share the feelings and emotions we have just experienced among the vineyards. And we notice how the wine in this cellar has a markedly distinct flavour, partly because we are in the territory and the people who make it and they share it with us.
