Soberanía National Park
On the east side of the Panama Canal, Soberanía National Park—one of the most accessible of the country’s protected parks—is a paradise for hikers, fishers, and bird-watchers. Some 1,300 plant species, 55 amphibian species, and hundreds of mammals, birds, and reptiles call the park home.

The Basics
With almost 55,000 acres (22,258 hectares) of forest to explore, Soberanía National Park offers a wealth of outdoor adventures in the Panama City region. Head to the Rainforest Discovery Center to spot wildlife from an observation tower. Or, walk the Pipeline Road or Las Cruces Trail (Camino de Cruces), once used by the Spaniards to transport merchandise and treasure from South America.

Day trips to the park from Panama City often include a guided hike through the forest. Many tours combine a park visit with stops at other attractions, such as Monkey Island or an indigenous village.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Plan to spend at least three hours exploring Soberanía National Park.
  • Park visitors need a hiking permit, which is included with most guided tours or available at the administrative office.
How to Get There
The park is about a 30-minute drive from Panama City, at the intersection of Avenida Gaillard and the entrance of Gamboa. The easiest way to get there is by car or as part of a guided tour with included transportation.

When to Get There
Visit the park between December and March, when rain is least likely to disrupt your plans. Early morning is the best time to see wildlife, particularly birds.

Outdoor Adventures Near Panama City
Urban Panama City makes a surprisingly good base for outdoor activities, within Soberanía National Park and beyond. Aquatics take center stage in the San Blas Islands on the Caribbean coast. A network of limestone caves and formations around Bayano Lake sets the scene for a day of canyoneering, while Gatun Lake (part of the Panama Canal) is a popular kayaking destination.

Sail along Lake Gatun, interact with monkeys and enter the selva of the famous EL CHARCO trail, in the heart of the Sovereignty National Park, where you will discover the beauty of the Rainforest of Panama. Onboard a boat, we will take a pleasant walk through the waters of the lake, enjoying the landscapes of the isthmus of Panama and observing the huge ships that cross the canal until reaching Isla Monos. In the area of mangroves that surrounds it, we will admire the natural richness of the jungle and interact with the numerous monkeys that have their habitat here. To be taken into account Animals are unpredictable. As it is a visit to the natural habitat of the monkeys, we cannot guarantee either the species that you will be able to see or the number of specimens. For the safety of monkeys and customers, it is recommended not to wear clothes or jewelry. when arriving on the islands do not carry the glasses on (the monkeys do not like).

The Chagres River, at the time of the colony, this mighty river was a transit route between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Spanish settlers, pirates, gold diggers passed through its waters, bringing incredible wealth from one place to another; Many never managed to reach their destination. Their stories were lost in these waters surrounded by jungle, with the passage of time they became part of one of the wonders of the modern world, the Panama Canal. Panama Outdoors invites you to join us on a kayak tour through this beautiful river. We will enjoy the historical comments of our guide, in which this river has been a vital part of the development of trade between both oceans. We will visit an Embera village, where we will have lunch and offer us a sample of their traditions such as dances, music, crafts and history.
