Resurrection Bay

Resurrection Bay, AK

The Basics

Many itineraries within Kenai Fjords National Park include a wildlife-watching cruise in Resurrection Bay. Those interested in bird-watching and wildlife spotting should be on the lookout for puffins, bald eagles, Dall's porpoise, Stellar sea lions, orcas, humpback whales, harbor seals, and sea otters.

Helicopter tours passing through the park to land at Godwin Glacier often fly right over Resurrection Bay. As the waters of the bay never freeze, they are also popular for kayaking and sailing.

Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Half-Day Wildlife Cruise
Staff worked hard to make sure every passenger had a good experience. We were fortunate to have good weather and calm seas. Plenty of wildlife was seen. The captain is knowledgeable about most, and admitted when she wasn't. Made for a more trusting in the safety of her skills.

Resurrection Bay Cruise with Fox Island
Wonderful tour! We loved seeing all the wildlife, especially the humpback whale. Our captain was really good at keeping an eye out for wildlife. She was also super knowledgeable about the area. Our favorite part though is when she steered us close to the hidden coves. We saw huge rocks sticking up out of the water. And on many of those rocks were sea lions, mountain goats and puffin. We enjoyed our stop at Fox Island also. The flat rocks there are fun to throw. All in all it was a lovely day!

Resurrection Bay Cruise with Fox Island
What a great day! Glaciers, whales, sea lions and a few Eagles. The boat was fun (dress warm) and the scenery was beautiful. Great crew telling us what we were looking at. Emma, the captain, had the right amount of commentary, and the right amount of quiet time. Highly recommend.

Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Half-Day Wildlife Cruise
The Captain went out of her way to find and show the wildlife in the area. Watching my Grandson's face as he saw the whale blow was worth the whole thing. Speaking of my Grandson, this was the first time on the water for him and he got very sea sick. The crew was wonderful. It was a dead calm day but so many got sea sick and the crew was kind and understanding and very fast to clean up the sick. This was old fashion service and they need high marks for how good they where.

Kenai Fjords and Resurrection Bay Half-Day Wildlife Cruise
Staff were very friendly and engaging. One of the best tours of Resurrection Bay I've ever been on. We brought family and got the big three, calm seas, orca whales, and humpback whales. We know this had little to do with the tour company but we'll give them all the credit as we had a wonderful time.

What’s in the Name

Alexander Baranov was a Russian merchant who was forced to take shelter in the bay during an intense storm. When the storm finally settled, it was Easter Sunday, and in honor, Baranov gave the bay (as well as the nearby river) the name Resurrection.
