Disappointed With Our Not So English Speaking Tour Guide :(
Divya S
, Dec 2019
I was really upset with the tour guide we received. I'm not trying to be a snob about English speaking skills, but as someone who wanted to learn the beautiful history of the country I'm from in English, I was very disappointed that our tour guide could barely explain the most crucial, major facts in English words. I'm sure he is excellent in whatever language he speaks, but in the end, I was the one who lost out on the experience because of his inability to translate the history in English. In addition, it's really inappropriate for a tour guide to bring personal politics or religion into the tour guide. While speaking about to the conflict that results in the battles between the Hindu and Muslim royal families, he consistently classified me and my friend and explained the history as "you guys did this to our monuments"... It is inappropriate to assume religion/cultural background for your audience and then use this assumption against the acts of the people in history that came long before them. To top it off, our tour guide could see that we were struggling to understand what he was saying and were not enjoying the tour - to which he stated in his own language that "he was hung over from partying too hard last night so he was not able to deliver a good tour". This is unacceptable form a professional tour guide as this is job and being hungover is not an excuse from performing your role to the best of your ability. I was really disappointed that I couldn't even learn the history of my own country because of the tour guide we received and am so sad that a once in a life time opportunity was ruined by something as simple as not receiving a tour guide who spoke the language I had requested.
