This Gone With the Wind sightseeing tour begins with a meet and greet with our guide dressed as the book’s author, Margaret Mitchell. Board a luxury coach for a trip around Atlanta to see the book and movie’s landmark locations.

Gone With the Wind was first published in 1936, the story set in Clayton County, Georgia, and Atlanta during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. This historic novel was popular with American readers from the moment it was published and quickly became the top American fiction bestseller. To this day, it continues to be the second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible with more than 30 million copies printed worldwide.

Relax while traveling through Atlanta to trace Margaret Mitchell’s time in the city, learning stories about her life and work.  she affectionately nicknamed “the Dump,” for a guided tour of the apartment where she wrote Gone with the Wind. The exhibit “Margaret Mitchell: A Passion for Character” presents her girlhood writings and eventual career as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal. Find out her motives for writing the book, how its popularity affected her life and the philanthropy that characterized her later years. Also, the “Making of a Film Legend: Gone With the Wind” exhibit details the transformation of Gone With the Wind from a best-selling novel to a classic film.

Then, drive to the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library to examine a special collection of Mitchell’s belongings. See the Remington typewriter she used to write the novel, her first drafts of the book and her Pulitzer Prize. Then, check out the original script of the movie with autographs from the film’s famous cast. Speaking of which, back on the road, drive by the Georgian Terrace Hotel, where Clark Gable and the rest of the movie cast celebrated the premiere of the film in 1939 at the Gone With the Wind Gala.

Finally, travel to historic Oakland Cemetery where Mitchell was laid to rest in 1949.

Thanks for the wonderful compliment. Sometimes we even forget that our "Margaret" isn't the real deal. Pretty close though! Thanks for touring with us!

We recommend just going to the Margaret Mitchell house and taking the tour there instead of wasting your time on a tour bus hearing the same stories from the tour guide.

Having the tour guide pretend to be Margaret Mitchell was the highlight of this tour. By speaking in the first person, factual information became part of the presentation as opposed to reciting a series of chronological events. Because of the small tour size it allowed for all to hear. Well-organized and well-paced.

I brought a friend of mine on this tour because of her love of Gone With the Wind! I must say I enjoyed it as much as she did, if not more. The ambiance that you all provide is exceptional and having Margaret Mitchell there continuously giving us background on her life was really a nice touch.
