Itinerary

Our Fajardo Bio Bay Kayak Tour begins at Las Croabas. First, our team will show you the basics of kayaking and safety. We will explain the rules of the nature reserve and board our kayaks. Let's Glow! The entrance of the Fajardo Bio Bay is through a red mangrove channel in Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. Along the way, you will see its protected flora and fauna.

Our eco guide will lead the way and explain the ecology of the place. The night will fall and stars will follow. In the sky… and in the water too.At every stroke of your paddle, lots of sparkles will appear in the water. All kayaks will create a swirl of light. The fish will glow in the darkness of the water. The place will turn magical! The intensity of the glow will depend on the phase of the moon. Little moonlight, brightest glow. But no matter how bright, it glows every day.

My wife and I went on this tour and loved it. Noelle and Kenny were phenomenal guides who were super professional and knowledgable. The bioluminescent bay was unique and a must see.

Mystical

We didn't see a lot of 'glow' since we went on a full moon, BUT the guides were amazing and made sure we saw what we could because they covered our kayak with a tarp to darken things. And, honestly, even if we hadn't seen any bioluminescence, the magical experience of kayaking between the mangroves in the dark was amazing. I'll never forget it.

Hola Diane, it was a pleasure to meet you and thank you for sharing your experience! We love that you were able to see more than “the glow” at the bay ! The nature reserve is amazing😍 To feel the tranquility of the nature, see the sunset, star gazing, is unique and it is all part of the experience. We are so proud that you were able to enjoy the experience in full! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts, We look forward to seeing you next time🇵🇷

Average tour

Unfortunately the bioluminescent bay visibility was low, at no fault to the tour guide. But the tour guide seemed uninterested and did not take pictures of us kayaking as we were told would happen. Also the trip was very short and we barely had any time in the bay. Other tours that went in stayed longer than our group.

Great Communication but . . .

We booked our pre-cruise excursion directly via Viator and the tour operator immediately communicated the tour details and pick-up information. Unfortunately the transportation that was arranged by the tour operator was over an hour late due to traffic and road construction. That was unavoidable but the actual tour leaders were less than patient in rushing us to a waiting group. Overall the tour was good but we quickly realized that us older folks were not as physically adept in navigating our kayaks in the complete dark as the younger folks on the excursion (not the tour operators issue). The guides helped as much as they could, even towing us back at the end. Be forewarned that there are several other tour companies doing the same tour and the mangrove portion of the trip will sometime feel like you are back home in rush hour traffic with a touch of bumper car action. Also, there are a ton of mosquitoes and even though we thoroughly sprayed down with the provided bug spray and wore long sleeve rash guards we were eaten head-to-toe. Not a pretty picture for all our cruise pictures. Do bring a bag with a change of clothes and a towel for afterwards that will be securely stored for you while out on the water. As for the bio-luminescence of the bay. You could see it but it wasn't super bright even though according to all the moon cycle websites we were on the bay at the optimal time. We still enjoyed ourselves, minus us old folks struggling with the kayak and night vision issues. Just be forewarned re bugs and physical demands of kayaking before booking this or similar excursions. Major kudos to Erica for excellent communications after booking and leading up to the tour. AND for noticing I had scraped my foot when I overturned my kayak and had some minor bleeding. She immediately pulled me over and insisted upon rinsing and bandaging it up even though I thought I was fine. I truly felt taken care of.

“Low” Visibility, still amazing

We were notified that visibility was low for some weather reason, (we also were not able to go during a new moon) but we took the late 8:45pm tour and followed the guides through the dark channel pretty easily. We have never seen anything like this. Our tour guides were informative and provided a tarp to block out light so we could see the bioluminescence better. I went with my 2 boys who did great with the kayaking. The trip to the lagoon was harder than the trip back due to current flow. We highly recommend this tour! We will come back when we can go during new moon.

Wow! This was such a neat experience, starting with our van driver Noni. She was so friendly and informative. The kayaking was great and it was a neat experience seeing the bio-luminescence in the bay. I highly recommend this tour!

Highly recommend this kayak tour. Staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I have been going to PR for over 12 years and this is the first time I have done the Bio Bay kayak tour, I will be doing it again, something to see and learn about.
