This was the highlight of my trip to Medellin. We went as a large student group to Joneal farm and they were the most welcoming and friendly people. I would highly recommend this for any ecotourists visiting the Medellin area.

WEAR JEANS AND SNEAKERS ON THIS TOUR!! Andres was my tour guide and it was a private tour. He was very knowledgeable and personable about the area. It was only about 30 minutes outside town and I felt very safe the whole way. The coffee farm has about 1,000 trees and it is privately owned by an older couple named Nina and Jose. Although they do not speak any English they are the sweetest, kindest, people you would ever want to meet. They walked you through all nine steps of the coffee making process and you have the opportunity to buy some bags of coffee through them. It was a really fantastic tour and I would highly recommend. I've done other coffee tours before in different countries but I liked this the best by far because you really got to pick the beans, skin them, roast the coffee etc... I want to note that I would have given this tour 5 stars if it weren't for Andres the guide and driver. I thought the weather was going to be hot so I dressed in shorts and flip flops. I was the only person on the tour and he picked me up at the hotel he should have told me to change my clothes since up in the mountains it is cooler and there are mosquitoes. Even though Nena offered me insect repellent I suffered from numerous bug bites and spent the remainder of the day trying to find a pharmacy to get some hydrocortisone.

We met our guide Andres and embarked on our tour to this coffee plantation at noon on a Thursday. Andres was fantastic and picked us up at our hotel right on time, and even though we got on the road right away, it took nearly 1hr45min of driving to reach the plantation lots of traffic, and a mudslide was partially blocking the road, which obviously isn't the tours fault, but just something to consider-- you WILL be doing a lot of driving on this tour if you're staying in the general Parque Lleras area as we were. When we got to the plantation, it was an incredible experience. Everything is owned by an older couple named Jose and Nina, and while they dont speak any English, were very kind, informative, and accommodating of us. We tried four different cups of coffee brewed different ways, while Andres explained the coffee growing process. We then picked some beans ourselves for a few minutes, and then witnessed the steps from start to finish for taking the raw beans and roasting them into a final product. It was fun, relaxing, and highly informative. Overall, we were at the plantation for slightly under 2hrs. Our drive back to our hotel took even longer, as traffic had gotten even worse, and took just over 2hrs to make it back-- so overall we spent nearly 4hrs in the car for this tour, which is the only slight negative I would mention. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this tour for any coffee lover if you have an open day, as it really is quite charming and well run, and you get an authentic glimpse at Colombian industry as well.
