Trace the tasty history of three of Costa Rica's most decadent crops on this combo coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour in Monteverde. Get a hands-on lesson in how raw coffee cherries, cacao beans, and sugar cane are transformed into a variety of products using traditional methods, and taste the delicious results with plenty of samples.
  • Combo coffee, cacao, and sugar cane tour in Monteverde
  • Learn the history behind three of Costa Rica's popular agricultural exports
  • Follow the journey of the coffee bean from cultivation through roasting
  • Transform raw cacao beans into velvety chocolate using traditional methods
  • Includes tastings of fresh brewed coffee, chocolate products, and pure sugar cane juice
Take your pick from four daily departure times, and begin the day with pickup at your Monteverde hotel. Begin with an exploration of Costa Rica's beloved caffeinated export on a coffee tour, where you’ll trace the history of the crop and how it became such an important part of the tiny nation’s socioeconomic development.

Learn how ripe coffee cherries are picked, and hear the stories of the migratory workers who play such an important role in the harvesting process. If touring during harvest season (usually November to February), try your own hand at coffee picking. Then, see how the raw cherries are transformed into aromatic brew with stops at the depulping machine, drying patio, storage warehouse, and coffee roaster. If you like, take a ride on a typical ox cart for a sense of how coffee farmers historically traveled. Finally, complete the journey with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee and a snack at the farm’s La Casona restaurant.

Once properly caffeinated, you'll next learn about another celebrated Central American crop on a chocolate tour. See how cacao beans are roasted, separated, and ground into smooth, rich chocolate using traditional methods. After participating in this process, taste the finished product in various forms including a velvety drink and solid chocolate flavored with spices or coffee.

End your tasting experience on a sweet note with a look at Costa Rica’s sugar cane industry. Learn how to extract sugarcane juice from the reeds, and then enjoy a glass of the pure, sweet liquid along with pieces of raw sugarcane.

Cafe Monteverde Coffee Tour
Coffee Tour The tour begins with a brief insight into the wonderful world of coffee followed by the history of Costa Rican coffee and its importance in the socio-economic development.  The tour starts with an introduction to the life cycle of a coffee plant starting with the coffee seed itself and taking a look at its fascinating evolutionary cycle. Coffee Picking: You will learn about the ways that the coffee cherries are picked, the lifestyle of the workers that carry out this task, their stories and the immigration that occurs during the harvest season. When the coffee cherries are ready to be picked (from November to February) this activity can be performed by the visitors. De-pulping Machine: You will get to see the way the pulp of the coffee cherry was traditionally removed, the washing process of the mucilage that is found underneath the pulp and the separation of the first class coffee beans from the rest. The Drying Patio: The hot and dry climate allows the coffee beans to be spread out on a large, cement patio in order to dry naturally under the sun. The Warehouse and the Coffee Roaster: In the warehouse the coffee beans are stored in big, fiber sacks allowing the beans to breathe and complete their aging process.  The selection of coffee beans, the roasting process and the final packaging of the Don Juan coffee is also carried out here. A Ride in a Typical Ox Cart: You will get the option to take a ride in a typical ox cart experiencing the exact way ancestors use to travel “La Casona” Restaurant: On returning to the main building you will get the opportunity to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee accompanied by a typical Costa Rican snack. Chocolate Tour On the tour you will be completely immersed for 30 minutes within the world of chocolate enjoying its delicious aromas and learning about its history. You will participate in the chocolate making process and have the opportunity to taste the fruit of the cacao and observe how the small cocoa beans are magically converted into a rich tasting chocolate drink.   You will get an insight into the traditional methods that ancestors used to roast the beans, separate the husks and grind the beans.  At the end of the tour you can enjoy the taste of the chocolate you’ve made in a variety of forms; liquid chocolate, plain chocolate, spiced chocolate and of course, coffee chocolate.  Sugar Cane Tour Here you will learn about the historical reason why many farmers had sugarcane mills on their farms.  Together you will extract the sugarcane the traditional way and then enjoy a glass of pure sugar cane juice as well as a few pieces of the cane itself.

Excellent, detailed tour of coffee, chocolate and sugar cane. Very friendly place of business! As much as you can drink coffee as well as some chocolate samples and trying sugar cane juice. We even got to meet Don Juan himself and take photos with him. He was genuinely happy we visited and excited to meet us! We ended up with a private tour since we went in the shoulder season end of May. Easy to drive to if you choose not to have them pick you up at your hotel.
