Overview

Get a look at the best of Johannesburg during a half-day luxury coach tour. Travel in comfort as you see the main attractions in the city, including the Westcliff views, Nelson Mandela Bridge, Constitution Hill, and more. Enjoy spectacular views of Johannesburg from the lofty heights of the viewing deck of the Carlton Center skyscraper.
  • Half-day Johannesburg sightseeing tour by air-conditioned coach
  • Enjoy captivating views from the 50th-floor observation deck at Johannesburg’s Carlton Centre
  • See the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newtown
  • Visit Constitution Hill and learn about South Africa’s turbulent past
Begin with a pickup at your hotel in Rosebank and Sandton, and settle into a comfortable coach for the drive into the historic center of Johannesburg. Listen as your guide tells you about what you’re seeing through the windows—things like the iconic Hillbrow Tower and Post Office Tower—before arriving at your first stop, Carlton Centre.

Visit the observation deck on the 50th floor of this skyscraper—the tallest one in Africa—for an incomparable view over Johannesburg. Enjoy some free time on the viewing platform, with your guide on hand to answer questions, before returning to your coach to continue your tour. Pass the South African Supreme Court building and have a brief photo stop at the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

The next point of interest is Constitution Hill. There you’ll see the Old Fort Prison Complex where Nelson Mandela was once held prisoner, as well as the new constitutional court building. Learn about South Africa’s troubled recent past during the apartheid years and how Constitution Hill was at the center of some of that history.

Continue through the neighborhood called Houghton, where many of Johannesburg’s wealthiest residents live on the return trip to your hotel.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about Jo-Berg and the people's struggles in South Africa. I didn't realize the tour was more about the city center and not the total area. We essentially drove around downtown and he told us about the history and politics. We asked if he would venture out to Soweto, which was quite interesting. Soweto is rich in history, as home to the poorest of the poor, but also has improved after apartheid and developed middle class and wealthier areas. My honest assessment is that this tour is far too long for the small section of the city that it actually covers. It is top heavy on political history, so better for travelers who want to hear than to see.

The tour that was in the description was not what we took. We spent most of the time at Constitution Hill and had to wait 25 minutes for the tour at CH to begin. I'm used to tours that provide lots of information while driving around. Unfortunately there was lots of silence while driving place to place. I would not recommend this tour.

The highlight of this tour was visiting Constitution Hill. Insist on taking as much time as you need here, as the rest of the tour goes by rather quickly and can you leave feeling rushed. Exploring Number Four - the prison complex that once housed Mandela and Ghandi is quite interesting.

Jo'burg gets a mixed press, and on the basis of our tour, undeservedly so. Our guide Moses was informative and gave a lively and fascinating presentation of Johannesburg's role in the development of modern-day South Africa. The Constitutional Court was well worth a visit, and seeing the redevelopment of down-town Jo'burg was a welcome antidote to the scare stories one hears. Highly recommended, and I just wish we'd had enough time to see Soweto too under Moses' excellent guidance.

The tour was good to get an overview of the city - we were just unlucky to have scheduled it for a Saturday afternoon when things close up early and the guide on Constitution Hill wasn't available and such - that being said - I'm glad we did it!
