Milford Sound is one of the star attractions of New Zealand’s South Island, but its remote location makes it tricky to visit on a day tour. This full-day tour from Queenstown is ideal for those short on time, combining a thrilling drive along the famous Milford Road, a scenic cruise around the UNESCO-listed fjord, and the chance to spot seals, dolphins, and penguins.
  • Full-day tour of Milford Sound from Queenstown
  • Marvel at the UNESCO-listed landscapes of the Fiordland National Park
  • Drive the spectacular Milford Road, one of New Zealand’s most famous drives
  • Enjoy a cruise around the Milford Sound fjord
  • Admire natural wonders such as Mitre Peak, Bowen Falls, and Mount Pembroke
  • Look out for marine wildlife such as fur seals, dolphins, and Fiordland crested penguins
  • Great-value tour includes hotel pick-up and round-trip transport from Queenstown
Your day begins with an early morning pick-up from your central Queenstown hotel by luxury coach. There’s a long journey ahead, so settle into your seats for the drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Don’t worry about getting bored, though—you drive along the mountaintop Milford Road, one of New Zealand’s most spectacular roads, and there are plenty of stops and photo opportunities along the way. As you soak up the scenery of the Fiordland National Park, listen as your driver points out natural wonders, and tells stories about the region’s fascinating history.

On arrival at Milford Sound, hop aboard a boat for a scenic cruise around the fjord. Keep your camera close to hand as you pass natural wonders like the 525-foot (160-meter) high Bowen Falls, the striking hanging valley of Sinbad Gully, and the snow-capped peak of Mount Pembroke.

Climb onto your boat’s viewing platform and keep a look out for local wildlife, including colonies of fur seals, pods of dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguins. As you continue towards the Tasman Sea coast, pass beneath the distinctive 5,551-foot (1,692 meter) mountain of Mitre Peak, one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks.

As you turn back into Milford Sound, see the dramatic approach witnessed by the first settlers at the end of the 18th-century, and hear stories about their journey from your guide’s live on-board commentary.

Back on dry land, the coach awaits to take you back to Queenstown, where your tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel.

Fabulous - especially with the flight back
, Feb 2020
Full day with lots of stop offs for opportunities to experience the wonderful views to break up the long journey. Cruise through Milford Sound a must but go prepared with a jacket or similar as it's blowy. We opted to fly back which was the icing on the cake. If this is the only time you're going to make this trip I'd suggest the flight home package.
12 out of 10 !!!

Real Journeys provides excellence services from every angle and easily get the 10 points. But the extra 2 points came when the single lane Homer Tunnel was temporary closed due to bus caught fire inside. They opened a cruise boat so that stranded passengers can relax inside with coffee and tea. The most amazing things they did is cooked up buffet hot foods for all of us to enjoy, they went the extra mile. Kudos to Real Journeys.
Beautiful place

Nice support for the company, good services, long busy day. Folders in English and Chinese, a little something in French would have been appreciated. Very nice experience.
Excellent tour!

Lovely day

The trip was well organised and professional. I really enjoyed the extra stops for pictures. The vehicle has a lot of window areas so it was great for admiring the views (and the views were magnificent). Once in Milford Sound, we were split into smaller groups that went on different boats so despite arriving in a full bus, the cruise wasn't too crowded. Milford Sound itself is absolutely stunning! We were lucky enough to see yellow-crested penguins, fur seals, dolphins and then also a kea on the way back. Something that could be improved is the commentary during the journey, it felt a bit low-energy and a bit rambling-like at times, but that didn't take away too much from the whole experience.
