Soak up the serene beauty of western Tasmania on a morning cruise from Strahan to the Gordon River. You’ll pass by natural landmarks such as Hells Gates, which marks the entrance to Macquarie Harbour from the Southern Ocean, and explore Sarah Island as you journey through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Select a seating category when booking.
  • Cruise from Strahan to the Gordon River
  • Enjoy the views of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area through the boat's floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Visit Sarah Island, a former convict settlement and shipyard
  • Enjoy a lunch or snack of local Tasmanian foods and beverages
  • Select from three seating levels on the main deck or premier upper deck
  • 'Quiet cruising' with electric motors on Spirit of the Wild, a brand new state-of-the-art vessel
This tour takes place aboard Spirit of the Wild, a spacious, catamaran specially designed to travel smoothly on the Gordon River and fitted with a unique hybrid propulsion system that allows you to cruise quietly on the Gordon River.
Depart Strahan and pass by Hells Gates, a narrow opening where the Southern Ocean meets Macquarie Harbour. As you take in the small gap—just 240 feet (80 meters)—it’s not hard to see how it got its ominous name from early sailors. Then head across the harbor, making your way to the lower reaches of the Gordon River as you pass by trout and salmon farms and the waterfront rainforest landscape of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Disembark at Heritage Landing for a walk through the forest to see a variety of trees, including leatherwoods and a unique species of pine. Stroll down a raised boardwalk, and arrive at a 2,000-year-old Huon pine that fell to the ground but still grows saplings. Then visit Sarah Island, a former penal colony from the 1820s and 1830s, and watch a theatrical presentation to learn about its history, including how the island was once an important Australian shipyard, where the boats were built by convicts.
When you’re on board the boat, you are welcome to visit the deck for fresh air and views, or admire the display of photos and maps. Enjoy lunch according to your tour option selected. Your cruise ends with return to Strahan.

An excellent cruise lasting a few hours. I would recommend this cruise to everyone. Lots to see and do.
Wild Hells Gate and the Silence

It was a rainy day when the Catamaran left Strahan heading to Hells Gate. What an amazing passage between lighthouses, rocky cliffs and an angry sea! How difficult must it have been in the early days to sail through this very narrow passage! An hour later we entered the Gordon River. The pure opposite! A sleepy Gordon River, a quiet and slow cruise upriver. I felt captured by nature and couldn’t see enough of this wonderful and majestic rain forest. Back to Sarah’s Island we stepped back in the convict ages - with impressive explanations about the black past in Australian (and British) history. Impressions you will never want to forget!
Wow - so much more than I expected - 5 stars

Modern boat designed for low impact on the pristine environment it travels through. The crew were entertaining as they told countless facts about Strahan, Macquarie Harbour, Gordon River etc. We sat in the elevated seats in the middle of the main deck and were still able to see out of the windows. Buffet lunch was great too. The visit to Sarah Island was a highlight.

Everything about this experience was top class. From the moment we arrived at the terminal to journey's end the staff were fantastic. The entire world should be grateful to the comparatively few people who fought to save this beautiful part of Tasmania.

Fantastic scenery. Informative crew, great buffet and loved the catamaran.Only negative would be that we didn’t need to upgrade to the more expensive window seats as you were able to walk around and stand on the upper decks.

We enjoyed a fabulous trip on the Gordon River. The weather was perfect, which made a big difference I suspect. It was the highlight of our trip to Tasmania. Well worth going.
