Manga drawing class in Tokyo led by a professional manga artist
Get familiar with the tools and materials such as screen tones
Arrive at the Manga School Nakano for your approximately 3-hour manga lesson. Meet your instructor and fellow students, then listen to a brief lecture on techniques and the history of manga. Students of all skill levels are welcome; the instructor will adjust their lessons to you, whether you're a complete beginner or honing your craft.
Try out some manga production tools such as screen tones, inks and three different types of specialized pen nibs. Begin working on your own manga-type character in a step-by-step way, listening to instructions or demonstrations with each step. Beginners can choose from various manga references to copy with the instructor's help. Manga drawing has several processes; pencil drawing (draft), inking (erasing all pencil lines), painting black parts, correcting mistakes and adding highlights with white ink. The last step is pasting screen tones (grey parts, textures, effects).
At the conclusion of your class, you'll walk away with your finished manga drawing as a souvenir.
I took a private session with Nao and learned so much in our few hours together. We worked on drawing a full scale figure-beginning with understanding proportions and then working on moving the character into a 3/4 action position. I got the chance to try out many Manga artist’s tools—beginning with markup pencil then lead, ink and eventually shading overlays and highlights. Really enjoyed the lesson. Nao is extremely talented yet approachable and friendly.
An absolute amazing opportunity to learn how to draw manga. I have been drawing my whole life but i haven't done manga in years so it was really awesome to get to do it again and with help from an amazing artist. Thank you so much.
I'm so glad I had this lesson with Nao. She was able to adapt the instruction to my level and interests. The only downside was that the time went too fast and I have so much to learn. If I lived in Japan I would enrol and go weekly if I could!! Thanks Nao.
I took my 13 year old granddaughter because she is a very talented little artist. Her mango lessons were amazing and she learned so much. This is one of the best things she took away from Japan. I highly recommend for any anime artist the instructor was also very good and spoke great English .
I signed up my 13-year-old daughter for this lesson during a recent trip to Tokyo, and it was the highlight of her trip. Among other things, she learned from a professional manga artist the manga creative process and how to use the various tools and materials involved. Her instructor was patient and kind. I highly recommend the experience. One suggestion, if you will want to purchase tools and materials, build in some time to do so after the lesson. The instructor was able to tell us where to go in Tokyo and what to buy, but we didn't have time in our schedule to make it happen. We were able to find all the things we needed at the International Manga Museum in Kyoto, though.
