After morning pickup from central Tromsø, take in Norway’s countryside as you travel by comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle to the start point on Kvaløya, a large and beautiful island just outside the city.
On route, hear how the ocean and fjords have been central to north Norway’s history and culture for centuries, and how kayaking is one of the best ways to experience these two great natural wonders.
Hop out at a picturesque beach, and get an introduction to kayaking from your guide. After a safety briefing, don the supplied clothing — including spray jackets and gloves — and climb into your kayak. Double kayaks are available and ideal for beginners, but if you’re experienced, ask your guide in advance about a single kayak.
Get instructions on steering and paddling — the basics are easy to master — and then, paddle out over the crystal-clear waters behind your guide kayak. Your guide will decide the route on the day, according to the weather, but you will paddle around local fjords and trace the shores of Håkøya, a scenic island set between Tromso and Kvaløya.
Pass beautiful pebble beaches, empty bays, and wooden houses, and admire the spectacular backcloth of Norway’s mountains and untouched countryside. Learn about local nature, and watch for the area’s bountiful wildlife, keeping a lookout for everything from sea birds to marine species.
When it’s time, return to shore, and enjoy a hearty lunch of traditional local dishes. Finally, hop back in your vehicle for your return ride to Tromsø, where your experience ends at the original start point.
