Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Rocklands Road, Wiltshire, Jamaica

The Basics

Founded by lifelong bird lover Lisa Salmon, the relaxing oasis is now run by her nephew Fritz, who welcomes travelers into his cottage home and shows the incredible diversity of avian life on the island. You will see stunning local birds, such as the Jamaican oriole, the white-winged dove, and Jamaica's national bird, the doctor bird (red-billed streamertail). Some birds, especially the tiny, shiny hummingbirds, are so tame that they will sit on your finger while feeding from a bottle of sugared water.

Travelers have many options to experience Rocklands Bird Sanctuary as part of a half-day tour leaving from Montego Bay or Falmouth, that may include sightseeing highlights of Montego Bay (St. James Parish Church, Richmond Hill Great House, Sam Sharpe Square). A more active adventure features a gentle rafting sojourn down the Rio Bueno River.

Absolutely MAGICAL!
If you love birds this will totally blow you away. I was moved to tears. You truly get to feed, while holding on a finger, sweet little hummingbirds. Not to mention all of the other birds and wildlife you get to experience as well. It was serene and absolutely magical. The Montego Bay highlights part of the tour was also fantastic. We got to see a middle-income neighbourhood, downtown, markets, historical sites, a church, and a historical hotel overlooking the entire city. It was truly incredible. We LOVED our driver/guide! Thank you!

Rockland Bird Sanctuary Day Tour
The experience was fantastic, and the sanctuary is certainly worth a visit! The sanctuary is quite small, but you are able to feed the national bird by hand and have a beautiful experience up close. Our driver, Andre, was fantastic as well, acting extremely friendly, professional, and willing to go above and beyond. Cross your fingers that you get him! Only downside was the length of the visit. We only spent about an hour and a half there and we were intentionally stretching it out at the end.

Loved the Rockland Bird Sanctuary! Was looking forward to seeing and feeding the Dr. Bird, and was not disappointed! They came right up to us immediately. Got to see other birds as well. Got some souvenirs at the store, and the view above the store was great!

My husband and I enjoyed our tour and the bird sanctuary was fantastic and the highlight of our trip. Our driver was flexible with what we did and we appreciated that immensely.

Roundtrip Shuttle Transportation to Rockland Bird Sanctuary from Montego Bay
The road up to the sanctuary was exhilarating and fun! Fritz, the proprietor, is a soft spoken man, but has great knowledge of the creatures in the preserve, and obviously loves them dearly. The tiny birds themselves tugged greatly at my heartstrings for sure! I would go back.

Rockland Bird Sanctuary Day Tour
Our driver Andre was amazing ! He was more than a driver , he’s definitely met to be a tour guide ! On the drive we learned so much, different bushes , plants, high schools etc ... Thanks Dre ♥️ When we arrived to the location we was greeted by Prince 👑 Man let me tell you he was amazing !!! The feeding of the hummingbirds was everything ! I surprised my husband who’s inlove with birds... we took a walk around the garden , learned plants, trees, whatever you seen prince told us ... the place was built in 1952 by a white Jamaican women who passed in 2002 , she did a amazing job with the place I wish I could have met her ! Overall I loved this place and will be back on my next vacation.

But the rest of the tour was problematic. It was good to see the real Montego Bay/ the view from the Richmond Inn is stunning and St. James was interesting. In retrospect- we should just have done Rocklands as we did not return to the resort until 2 PM...no stopping for lunch. Although ewe mentioned lunch to the guide (with caveats local food and SAFE) but he may not have taken us seriously OR traffic is so bad in "downtown" we may have been running late OR he just didn't know of a place that fit the requirements.

A Birder’s Legacy The sanctuary has a lovely history. When the original owner Lisa Salmon moved to this remote area in the 1990s, she took long walks through the forested hills, falling in love with the exotic birds and occasionally feeding them on her way. After about five years, her feathered friends started following her home. As the story goes, the day she died, the birds left, and on her burial day in 2000, they miraculously returned to stay to this day.
