How to Spend 3 Days in Windhoek

How to Spend 3 Days in Windhoek

In contrast to the vast and arid desert dominating Namibia’s rural landscape, the country’s vibrant capital is a hive of activity and culture—and three days are enough time for a comprehensive overview. From urban sightseeing to nature escapes, here are some ideas for your Windhoek itinerary.

Day 1: Top Attractions

Get oriented and make the most of your time on a tour of Windhoek’s major landmarks and bustling suburbs, exploring colonial relics like Alte Feste, Christ Church, and Tintenpalast. Several excursions also stop by Katutura and a local NGO. After a lunch of kapana (grilled beef), learn about Namibia’s heritage at the Independence Museum, National Museum, or National Art Gallery, before swinging by the Namibia Craft Centre to shop for authentic souvenirs. For dinner, stay in Windhoek Central, where you’ll find a wealth of restaurants and bars serving traditional and international fare.

Day 2: Namibia’s Natural Landscape

Multi-day tours depart the Namibian capital daily. Travelers can marvel at the surreal landscape of Sossusvlei, see endangered species in Etosha National Park, and more. You don’t have to go far from Windhoek, though, for a peek at nature’s majesty. Check out the centrally located National Botanical Gardens, or make your way to the Daan Viljoen Game Reserve or Avis Dam Nature Reserve.

Day 3: A Glimpse of Rural Life

Dedicate your final day to discovering some of Namibia’s wildlife and rural cultures. Not far from the city, reserves and sanctuaries such as Düsternbrook Guest Farm, Okapuka Ranch, and Naankuse Lodge offer game drives and nature trails that provide close encounters with cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, and more—so choose a destination and head out. Some packages include immersive experiences with local communities for insight into the region’s traditional ways of life.
