During the 19th and 20th centuries, the “golden-age” of Budapest, the capital of Hungary was a center of art and intellectualism. On this tour we explore the energy that propelled Hungary's turn-of-the-century cultural renaissance. Our backdrop for this exploration: the stunning architecture from this time period, which reveal the politics, economics and culture of the time. At the turn of the 20th century, neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau buildings emerged to change the landscape of the city. We will begin on Andrassy Street, the hub of economic growth for the city in the 19th century. During our time in this area, we may stop by the Opera House, Academy of Music, and the Paris Department Store, a famous masterpiece of Art Nouveau. We will also look at the emergence of the bourgeoisie, and how changing social conditions sparked new ideas and aesthetics for the city as a whole.
