Overview

See the Mendenhall Glacier up close on a half-day tour from Juneau. You'll ride across the waters of Mendenhall Lake in a traditional Tlingit-style canoe that permits unobstructed viewing of the glacier, icebergs, Nugget Falls, and perhaps some Alaskan wildlife. Includes all equipment, snacks, and port pickup and drop-off.
  • Half-day tour of Mendenhall Lake and Glacier, from Juneau
  • Get close to the Mendenhall Glacier while riding in a traditional canoe
  • Snap photos of icebergs, a towering waterfall, and the glacier
  • Learn about the history of this part of Alaska
  • Includes transportation, snacks, guide, and boat ride
Meet your guide at the cruise ship dock or Mt Roberts Tram, then travel to Mendenhall Lake.

Step aboard the traditional Tlingit-style canoe for your paddle on the lake. The stable 28-foot (8.5-meter) boat is equipped with safety gear and paddled by your expert guide. Navigate past icebergs to come within a safe distance of the massive face of the Mendenhall Glacier. Skirt around the glacier to see Nugget Falls, a towering waterfall that cascades 377 feet (115 m) into Mendenhall Lake.

To protect the participants on the close encounter with the glacier, the US Forest Service tightly controls the number of permits for this approach, making this a truly special Alaskan experience. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as arctic terns, eagles, goats, salmon, and bears.

After your time on the water, head ashore and refuel with a snack of Alaskan-style fare before your return to Juneau.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Mendenhall Lake
Be among the select few allowed to travel by canoe for an unprecedented experience near the face of the majestic Mendenhall Glacier under a limited U.S. Forest Service permit. Paddle across Mendenhall Lake, navigating past icebergs, surrounded by one of the most scenic and naturally beautiful locations you’ll find anywhere. Birds including arctic terns nest on the shoreline, and eagles, goats, salmon and bears may also be seen. You will venture within a safe distance of the massive, awe-inspiring face of the living Mendenhall Glacier, and skirt the base of the beautiful and powerful Nugget Falls, where you’ll head ashore to refuel for the return paddle with a snack of Alaskan-style fare. You’ll make your trip in a traditional Alaska Native-style canoe, an exceptionally stable 15 to 20 passenger watercraft. Because of the close approach to the glacier face, the Forest Service tightly controls the number of participants. Only a lucky few get to experience this one-of-a-kind adventure.

NOT A GOOD TOUR COMPANY

, Jun 2019
I booked four tours on my cruise ship trip to Alaska in mid June 2019 via Viator. This was the only one said I cannot make a any change while other three I can cancel one day before the tour. When we arrived Juneau, the staff told us the tour was cancelled due to weather condition, but the weather was good, no wind, not cold and just a little drizzles. My guess is that they cancelled because there were only five participants.
