Convene with your local guide in old town Ljubljana and begin your 3-hour culinary walking tour. First, stroll into an old Yugoslavian influenced fish tavern for light bites and wine. Sense the ambiance of the early 20th century and begin to see the changes of Slovenia’s cultural past and present.
Then walk to a few bars and cafes nestled under beautiful chestnut trees. This beautiful neighborhood is a lovely place to treasure a platter of charcuterie and cheese. Rinse down the salty goodness with Slovenian wine sourced from nearby vineyards. Try lesser known selections for a true Slovenian experience.
Listen to the chatter of locals mingling at sidewalk cafes as you walk along the Ljubljanica River, then duck into a bakery for a taste of local Ljubljana cake.
Next, make your way over beautiful Triple Bridge towards Preseren Square (Presernov trg) where on hot days the city creates a manmade rain cloud that sprinkles refreshing water droplets. Here, visit the statue of poet France Preseren and learn how his love story helped Slovenia become the country of love.
Continue on to a shop full of regional honey and blueberry schnapps and try the sweeter side of Slovenia. Finally, head up to a rooftop cafe for one of the city’s best vantage points and perhaps a drink (own expense). Enjoy salutations with your fellow group members and guide before you decide your next Ljubljana experience.
Get to know one of Europe’s most beautiful cities in one of the best way’s possible - through its food. While it might still be an underrated destination, Ljubljana has been slowly upping its culinary game, emerging as a city perfect for travelling foodies.
You will meet your friendly, local guide in Prešeren Square in the very centre of the city.
We’ll head straight for Ljubljana’s vibrant farmers’ market to discover hidden gems, wander through the inner market, and taste some local goodies. We’ll also check out the fish market and try a sip of fresh milk straight from the farm.
Next, we’ll make our way to the heart of Ljubljana’s Old Town, past some of the city’s most famous landmarks whose stories will be revealed to you as we walk. We’ll be making two tasty stops as we walk across the Town square, where you will have the chance to try some local honey as well as a sweet-salty bite of handmade chocolate topped with fleur de sel.
Digging even deeper into the region’s food scene, you’ll learn about the importance of the Slovenian forest and its fruits. We’ll sample a liquor made from blueberries, dried figs or honey, which will help you understand the cultural importance of these drinks and their importance in shaping our national character.
Even though you’ve been snacking all day, now it’s time for a proper meal. We’ll continue to a restaurant where locals love to go for their daily lunch. The menu offers three different options (always including a vegetarian dish).
We ended up having an exclusive Tour as we were the only 2 people signed up for that day. I can highly recommend the experience. It was interesting to see parts of the city we would not have ventured in to as tourists and get the true "insider's view" of Ljubljana and Slovenia from a native. Oh, and the food was good too! No dinner required the evening!
