In anticipation of our upcoming cruise to Palma de Mallorca, we had booked an online private tour with Patrick and Cecilia of Mallorca Island Tours. For the same price as a ship big group bus tour, we booked a private tour of a family owned ands operated winery in the Serra de Tramuntana area of Puigpunyent: The Son Puig Winery (pronounced: “Sun Pooch”). Little did we know when we started out the day that this would be the perfect touring day for us.

Two family members and 3 employees, run the entire 9 hectares (almost 22-acre) winery and fruit orchard, planting, cultivating, pruning, harvesting, culling, crushing, fermenting, aging, bottling, labeling and shipping 40,000 bottles of red and white wine each year. It was quite an impressive operation for such a small winery. After our tour of the facility, we sat down to tapas and wine with Isabel in her Mother’s garden under a pergola laced with grape vines and dined on local Pa Amb Oli (round pita-like bread topped with olive oil and assorted tapenades, ranging from roasted peppers to onion and tomato to spinach and fish), Iberian ham (aged ham from acorn fed pigs in the Iberian region of Spain which is sliced very thinly), local cow’s milk and sheep’s milk cheeses and, for dessert, ensaimadas (sweet bread rolls coiled in a circle and dusted with powdered sugar). Of course, we also tasted four kinds of wine: A white, rose and two red wines. The perfect setting for delicious food and wine.

We ended our day on foot, touring Palma’s city center, including the huge Gothic style cathedral that dominates the resort town’s skyline. A perfect touring day with a delightful guide and skilled driver!
