Return Details

Returns to original departure point
After pickup at your Mexico City hotel, head with your guide about two hours east of the city close to the base of the dormant Iztaccihuatl Volcano. You’ll be burning some calories ahead, so chow down on breakfast (own expense) before traveling through the Valley of Mexico, a highland plateau in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, and the mountain pass of Paso de Cortés, before getting out at La Joya.

Start your hike up Iztaccihuatl Volcano, beginning at an elevation of 12,000 feet (3,700 meters). The volcano is also called ‘The Sleeping Woman’ or ‘White Woman’ for the four snow-covered peaks. While there are various trails ranging in difficulty, your guide will take up on an intermediate-level trail that both novices and those with more hiking experience will enjoy.

You may ascend as high as 13,800 to 15,800 feet (4,200-4,800 meters), depending on the members of your group, and reach tantalizingly near the snowcapped peaks and glaciers. After you catch your breath, admire views of the Valley of Mexico below, as well as the active volcano of Popocatepetl, aka ‘Smoking Mountain,’ located south of Iztaccihuatl.

Enjoy ample time at the summit to snap pictures and generally soak in the tranquility of the mountaintop. When you’re ready, make your descent and then board your transport to enjoy lunch (own expense) that may include options such as tamales, quesadillas, birria (spicy meat stew) or other tasty dishes. Arrive at your Mexico City hotel in the evening, with plenty of bragging rights to share.

My best Mexico hike

This was a great experience! So glad we booked it. A must to do when in Mexico. The altitude is high, so be aware of your limitations, but don't worry the guide Gerson is awesome and very professional. Also be sure to bring cash with you for the extras not covered by the tour itself.

Amazing hike with great guides

We booked the hike for the vulcano few weeks in advance. We got our tickets and the basic informationvia email. I also emailed the company asking about the meeting point. They sent me a photo of the place and a detailed map from our hotel to find the place easier! That was a really nice touch and customer service. We went with 2 minivans (around 15 people all together) and made a stop on the way in a small supermarket to buy water and snacks. Thats also a nice touch for people, who dont know how and waht to prepare for the trek. We had amazing visibility conditions, the clouds stayed below us the whole time and we were enjoying the sunshine and a great view of Popocathepetl the whole time. The trek itself wasnt difficult, but we went from 3.990 m to 4.500m and it was really difficult to keep breathing in that altitude. The job of the guides was essencial here! One of them went in in the front and kept reminding us to breath slowly and deeply, also making little stops every 10 minutes to catch out breath and put the group together. The second guide was at the end of the group making sure everyone is okay. I thought I will reach the first base and rest as it was really challenging to continue, but the guides were very supportive and motivating and we went to try the second base too. I can highly advise to try the second base, its a different trek, very steep but you are progressing very slowly and carefully and its not a long way. The guide was staying with us all the time, motivating us and giving us enough time to enjoy the hike, and make pictures as well. On the way home we stopped in a small bufet with local food, where we could try some yummy specialities for a very reasonable price. It was one of the best experiences for me. The 2 guides were super friendly and played a very important role in making the experience wonderful. I would definitely recommend to do this trip, and especially with the Amigo tours, who provide great experienced guides. P.S. I recommend to bring treking poles, as they make the hike much easier.

Great adventure outside of the city

I highly recommend this experience. This excursion made the trip for me and my friends to Mexico City. The hike can be challenging due to elevation but the scenery is totally worth it. also, the woman at the bottom of Iztaccihuatl makes the best quesadillas and coffee. My guide was Andres and he was AMAZING. He made sure everyone was doing okay on the hike. I would gladly do this tour again when I go back to Mexico City.

Disappointed

The email you sent said departure was at 7 am. So we prepared for that. It wasn’t till we drilled down into the ticket that we saw a MUCH earlier time that you expected us to be at our stop. We called and asked if the transport could wait for us and you said no. TOTAL RIP-OFF of our money.

Tour accommodations were great for pickup, travel, directions, etc. However you spend more time in the van than hiking which is unfortunate.

Great Guide, Great Views

Gerson was a great guide- knowledgeable, funny, and considerate. Omar was a safe driver. If you're not acclimated to the altitude yet and/or don't have hiking experience, you might find this hike challenging. If you are acclimated and/or are an experienced hiker, you'll find this hike easy. The van brought us most the way up the mountain, so we only gained about 500m in elevation from actually hiking. As with all group hikes, you'll have to adjust your pace to what other members are comfortable with which can be a but frustrating, but overall, the incredible view from the top makes everything worthwhile. So do the quesadillas.

Hike on Iztaccihuatl Volcano Hiking Tour

Yes we were collected on time at the appointed location and had a 2 hour drive to start. Bus had windows that one could open for air which was important to me as I suffer a little from Asthma.Had 2 stops en route which was also good. Then guide took us on hike up to 2nd Gate from 3,900m to 4,300m approx and about 3klm in distance. The Guide had good English and took off at a fast pace but at the 1st Gate I asked him to slow down as Poli/Poli is best i.e. Slowly, Slowly at altitude so he did and most people made it to the 2nd Gate. It was a little hazy but clear enough for photos and the views to the top of the mountain were good. Then after 3 and half hours we returned and had lunch at a roadside Cafe with home made Tortillas. We were dropped back to our Hotel which was good and we tipped the Guide after a lovely day. So go for it if you are in Mexico and have the time. You can go to hut at near the base of the start and it takes 15 hours to do the whole climb to the top, but the shorter day suited me. We could also see Popo the Volcano opposite that is active and it was steaming a little as both peaks are very distinctive and you can see them for miles whey flying into and driving around Mexico city. Yes would recommend if one has the time.Tip. Bring plenty of water and some snacks if you are the thirsty or hungry type!!

This was a very good trip! The guide was helpful and knowledgeable, and the views from the hike were incredible. Just a warning - it is very steep and vigorous, so be prepared to feel out of breath, and to fall. Overall, it was very worth it!
