Spectacular Northern Lights
, Jan 2020
We came to Iceland in January to see the Northern Lights and were lucky to see them on our first night there. We monitored the weather for the length of our trip to see what day would be the best to go. Many of the other travelers we talked to were not able to see them on the other nights. There are a few things I would recommend before booking your tour. 1. Definitely go with the small group tour as you have better chances to find the Northern Lights and you don't have to deal with a lot of people coming on and off the bus. 2. Download Northern Lights Photo Taker or similar app to have a better chance to capture Northern Lights on your phone before the tour. The wifi was not working on the bus and I was unable to download app. 3. Bring cash if you want the guide to take a photo of you with the Northern Lights. Luckily I had 2000 ISK Kronos with me. However, this should have been included with the tour as this is the highlight of most travelers trip to Iceland. 4. If you are bringing a DLSR camera without a tripod, try to book the tour with the tripod. I feel this should be an option on all tours to rent. It is a spectacular experience but hope I shared a few tips to help go more prepared than me.
Excellent trip

Sounds like we were really lucky on our trip as quite a lot of the recent trips had been cancelled due to the weather. We were picked up promptly at our designated bus stop and started the hunt for the Northern Lights - didn't seem to take our driver/guide Makrem (apologies I have probably spelt this incorrectly!) long to find a spot to see the lights which were just as good as I had expected He was also able to give people advice with cameras and phones for the correct settings to get the best pictures. My whole family really enjoyed the trip - obviously this is a natural phenomena so you have to be prepared to be disappointed but sounds like we had a lucky night.
Strike 1, Strike 2, HOMERUN!

As you've read, it takes 3 conditions for you to be able to see the Northern Lights. Weather, time of year, and solar wind activity. It takes 1 more condition. A proper tour company that works well with its customers. As stated, they wait until the last moment to tell you if the tour is on or cancelled due to the weather. You can check several ways. You can check their facebook page, check their widgit on their website, or waif for their email. ON night 1, the tour got cancelled. I immediately called them to rebook for the next night and was confirmed. On the second night the weather still did not cooperate and we were cancelled again. I called and rebooked again for our 3rd night. The 3rd night was a charm. The skies opened up and we were on our way! The tour guide was very informative. I think they set you up for disappointment because even though the sky may be clear, it also depends on outer factors. Fortunately for us, even though the KP rating was a 2, we got to see the lights in all their glory. The guide took us out into the darkness and helped anyone needing help with their camera. I liked this tour because of the limited amount of people on it and the "white glove" service we had. I did not know what to expect in seeing the aurora borealis. I thought I would see the sky lit with dancing vibrant green lights. It is actually hard to see with the naked eye. It takes the technology of a good DSLR on a tripod, an open aperture, very high IOS, proper focus, and an 8-10 second shutter to get the perfect photo. We were extremely luck that night to see the lights. The tour guide took a group shot of us all se we have proof we were actually there! In fact my tip to you is to tip the guide and ask him to take a personal photo of your group. It was a perfect tour, not only because of being blessed to see the lights, but the tour was well planned and personalized and that helped out with the process.
Amazing northern lights adventure

We had a great time on our northern lights excursion. Our driver was very good and helped us with our phone settings. It is good to have the "northern lights photo" app already downloaded for iPhone, our guide had us download it on our way there. It will help with the dark light setting. He was also able to help with camera settings on regular cameras. You should bring a tripod, but if you dont want to lug a full one even a mini one they sell on amazon for iphones will work. He took great group photos and was even able to take a photo of my husband and I that we just loved. You do have to be patient as the trip is very weather dependent and dependent on how active the lights happen to be that night. We did see them so we were very happy. It was VERY cold though so I would add layers from what you have been wearing during the day. Tips: All the tours we went on in Iceland (across different companies) required you be at your bus stop 30 minutes prior to your tour time. We definitely saw people who had missed their tours because they didn't understand this. So make sure you know where your tour is picking you up and what time you need to be there. Also check that your tour is going. They decide around 7pm if there are weather conditions preventing the trip and they will cancel (they will refund you or credit you towards a later night in your trip). For this reason we went our first night so that if it got canceled we still had more nights to try to go.
Great service

We met at bus stop 6 promptly, we did not have to wait long at all. The tour guide took us to multiple spots to make sure we got a good view. Once we got there he helped everyone with their pictures. If they didn't have a good camera he's take a photo for you on a company camera. If you had one he'd help you with the settings to get a good photo. Things you need to bring are MULTIPLE layers especially socks. I had wool socks in winter boots and my feet still got cold. I'd double up on socks, I also had multiple layers and thermals on. Another thing you NEED is a tripod to get a clear photo of the lights, and if possible timer it remote for the photos of you'd like to be in the picture. Overall great experience, our guide was AWESOME

I have to admit we were skeptical about seeing lights last night but Makrem was patient, optimistic and very determined to provide a magical experience for his group. It was truly unforgettable. Thank you Makrem for making 3 times a charm for your new friends from Philly.
fantastic guide and effort made

like most people was disappointed not to see the lights but our driver made every effort possible and drove to so many various possible locations so can't fault him. was out from about 8.30pm to after 0100 trying. would recommend rather than the big general trips. excellent value for money

The tour was cancelled due to bad weather . however, when I asked for refund I was given it back 2 days later. Company is very prompt with warnings, refund, etc. Didn't go on a tour but would recommend. Reliable.
Wonderful guide and great way to see the northern lights!

My daughter and i celebrated my birthday by booking this small-group tour to see the Northern Lights, and it was terrific! Our guide Magnus was extremely helpful, well-informed, responsive to our many questions, and absolutely determined to find the best spots to see the elusive lights! Do dress warmly, as you will be outside a lot. Well worth it and highly recommended!

Saw the northern lights! It was a great tour, guide was fantastic. He drove to one spot then changed when the lights came out in a different area. He pointed out sights, gave information, was willing to change the tour and spend as much time as the group wanted. Overall fantastic tour!
