Truly awful experience.
Before the tour, we received multiple emails from our guide, Kenji, asking for our preferences, interests, etc. So we were quite hopeful. But on tour day, our guide seemed completely clueless and was flat out lazy. He slept on the way to Mt. Fuji. When we got there, he seemed to be googling things in real time and didn't know exact timings for anything. He didn't really have an itinerary planned for us and didn't even know what existed at each stop at Mt Fuji!!! It was quite obvious he had not done much research. The first viewing point had very nice flower gardens which he never told us about. When we arrived to find Mt. Fuji shrouded in clouds, he tried to usher us back on the bus, but we ventured out on our own and stumbled upon the flower gardens ourselves. His response was that 'he didnt know we would be interested in the flower gardens'. Next up was the cable car up to a vantage point and a boat ride in the lake. He asked if we wanted to do both. We said yes, so we bought tickets to both. But he didn't know or care to check the timings for the boat. Neither did he tell us that we had to be ready for the boat by a certain time. By the time we did the cable car, the boats had stopped running. We asked if we could get a refund but we couldn't. So the boat tickets and time was wasted. At the cable car vantage spot, he just sat in one place and offered no 'tour' guidance. He admitted he didn't even know that there was another, higher viewing point. Again, we found it on our own!! It's like he had never been to Mt Fuji or done any research.
And along the way we saw that there were so many other things that we could've done- there's a musical museum, cute cafes etc. And when we would point them out, he'd say 'ah yes, there is that, but now we have no time'. There was no planning or customization to our preferences.
There was very little commentary and information given to us. And to top it all off, he asked us to pay for all his sightseeing tickets (sightseeing bus, cable car, boat ride which never happened) and his lunch!! Never have we been on a tour in which the guests have to pay for the tour guide! That should be included in the price of the tour! It was ridiculous.
Essentially we paid someone to come along with us on a public bus and Google things from time to time when we asked him to. It was as if WE were giving HIM a tour. We could've done this ourselves and done a much better job. Though we deserve a full refund but even getting monetary compensation would not make up for the missed experiences.
